A HALF marathon that once attracted 1,000 runners to Burnham-On-Sea is returning after a 12-year absence.
The Burnham-On-Sea Half Marathon was last held in 1993. But its return on Sunday, October 2, 2005 is being hailed as another great sporting event for the town.

Cabbies help hit and run victim
TWO Burnham-On-Sea taxi drivers came to the rescue of a man left injured in the middle of the busy A38 after an apparent hit and run accident. Alan Miller from Custom Cars and a fellow cabbie from M Taxis were driving along the road early on Sunday when they saw the victim.

HUGE waves battered Burnham's seafront early on Saturday morning when 60mph gales combined with some of the highest tides of the year. The spectacular storm was watched by walkers along The Esplanade as the waves and spume soared over the sea wall near the Tourist Information Centre.

Rising sea traffic in bay
OFFICIAL new figures show that 79 ship visits brought over 105 thousand tonnes of cargo to Dunball Wharf in Bridgwater, passing Burnham-On-Sea on the way, during 2004. The figure represents a 4% increase on 2003 and a huge 22% increase on the previous year.

Spate of burglaries in town
POLICE are asking people living in the Stoppard Road area of Burnham-On-Sea - known locally as the Tesco Estate - to be extra vigilant after a spate of burglaries. Burglars struck at six homes on the estate in the early hours of Friday, January 28, 2005 and stole valuables.

TWO DOLPHINS have been spotted swimming in the sea off Burnham by a group of local fishermen. Adam Picton told Burnham-On-Sea.com how he and fellow fishermen onboard a small offshore boat noticed the two dolphins - identical to the ones shown here - one morning this week.

4x4 vehicle rescued from mud
BURNHAM'S hovercraft team helped rescue a 4x4 landrover stuck in thick mud near the town's old lighthouse on Wednesday, February 1. The Coastguard was initially called to the scene at Lark Spit, near the old lighthouse, but was unable to pull the 4x4 Shogun free.

BURNHAM-On-Sea residents were forgiven for taking a double take as they passed by the town's main lighthouse this week. For perched on top of the 30 metre tall structure were two brave workmen carrying out repairs. The famous landmark was being given some repairs to its roof.

Ship aground off Stert Island
A SHIP ran aground just off Stert Island, opposite Burnham-On-Sea, soon after 11am on Tuesday (January 25).
Walkers along the seafront watched as the ship - measuring approximately 20 metres in length - came to rest on a bank of sand. It stayed there until the incoming tide enabled it float off.

BURNHAM-On-Sea's property prices are predicted to continue rising throughout 2005 according to a survey by one of the UK's leading property forecasters. It believes the cost of homes in both of Burnham's postcode areas will rise during the next 12 months.

Helicopter rescue rehearsed
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Coastguard team have rehearsed a dramatic mud rescue by using an RAF helicopter to lift 'casualties' from a treacherous area near the River Axe at Uphill, near Brean Down. An RAF 169 helicopter from Chivenor was used by the Coastguard in the three-hour exercise.

£15k seafront illuminations plan unveiled
BURNHAM seafront is to be lit up with attractive illuminations following the town council's decision to gave the green light to a £15,000 project.
The lighting, which will run along the Esplanade, could be in place for the Spring Bank Holiday period this year.

A BRAVE new band of volunteers has joined Burnham-On-Sea's hovercraft group following a successful appeal for help. More than a dozen people have responded to an appeal in local newspapers and on radio, TV and the Internet. Many came along to Burnham's hovercraft station on Wednesday January 12.

BURNHAM-ON-SEA Town Council held a three minute silence in memory of the victims of the tsunami tragedy on Wednesday January 5th. They gathered besides the water feature in Pier Street, Burnham where the town flag was lowered. It follows the deaths of over 150,000 people in the Far East.

A NEW £65,000 'Soft Track' lifeboat launching vehicle has been delivered to Burnham-On-Sea RNLI - and volunteer lifeboat crew members were able to use it for the first time during their latest training session. It was bought after a will bequest from a Berrow resident.

ONE OF Somerset's longest running drama groups, the Burnham Excellent Entertainment Society, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this month. The group - which is also known as BEES - is marking its tenth birthday with two performances of a special musical cabaret called simply 'Ten'.

Ship runs aground on beach
A BARGE ran aground on Burnham-On-Sea Beach overnight on Friday November 12th. The 50ft vessel was beached on a patch of sand near the jetty after suffering an engine failure. It remained there until the following morning when the incoming tide gave it buoyancy.

HMS Burnham remembered
A PLAQUE dedicated to the wartime destroyer HMS Burnham has been unveiled in Burnham-on-Sea. The ship, along with forty nine other escort vessels, played a vital role in helping win the Battle of the Atlantic from 1940 to 1944. Exactly sixty years ago, the crew of the vessel marched through the streets.

PARALYMPIC swimming winner Anthony Stephens has received a hero's welcome by touring the streets of Burnham and Highbridge in an open-top bus. Many hundreds of people lined the route between Highbridge community hall and Burnham's Princess theatre to get a glimpse of the 18-year-old.

The 28-year-old University of Bath employee was one of 72 swimmers taking part in the event, which sees competitors embark from Burnham on Sea beach, swim across the mouth of the River Parrett to Stert Island, before swimming back to Burnham on Sea.

BURNHAM-On-Sea RNLI have been practising how to return their Atlantic 75 lifeboat to shore during a storm.
A rope net was attached to the launch trailer and then driven into the sea by the RNLI's tractor where it catches the lifeboat when the craft is steered into it.

BURNAM-ON-SEA RNLI needs more day time lifeboat crew and day time shore helpers. Suitable applicants would have the opportunity to work within a dedicated, friendly team of volunteers. A spokesman said: "Experience is not essential. We will train you. All we need is people willing to become involved."

Fire sweeps through dunes
DOZENS of firefighters tackled a big blaze in Berrow dunes on Wednesday night (Sep 1st). The fire broke out at around 8pm and quickly spread across the marshy dunes and brush to the west of Berrow Church. The fire appeared to be active in at least four areas.

A RESCUE team involving Burnham-On-Sea's hovercraft, the coastguard, paramedics and an RAF helicopter were called to help a 46 year-old woman who suffered an asthma attack while walking in treacherous mud on Brean Beach on Wednesday, September 1st.

BURNHAM will aim to beat its own world record for the most people twisting on a beach - as featured in the Guiness Book of Records - on Sunday August 29th. The first ‘Let’s Twist Again’ event held on the seafront in August 2002 attracted a record 1,150 people and this year it's hoped 2000 will attend.

YOUNGSTERS in Burnham are to get a new facility where they can gather informally and which they can call their own.

Town's emergency services go on display
BURNHAM-ON-SEA'S emergency services are to take part in a display of their life-saving skills on Saturday August 21. ESCAPE, the Emergency Services Community Awareness and Promotion Event, will include performances from BARB's rescue hovercraft and the RNLI's lifeboats.
BURNHAM-ON-SEA'S emergency services are to take part in a display of their life-saving skills on Saturday August 21. ESCAPE, the Emergency Services Community Awareness and Promotion Event, will include performances from BARB's rescue hovercraft and the RNLI's lifeboats.
Cliff rescue at Brean Down
A man is recovering in hospital after falling down cliffs near Burnham-On-Sea at around 4pm on Saturday August 28th. The man lost his footing and slipped down an 18ft gully at Brean Down seriously injuring both legs. He also sustained head injuries after rocks fell on to him.
