Crime-busting musical in town
ELDERLY people in Burnham-On-Sea are to be given the chance to see a musical aimed at helping them not to fall victim to crime. As part of a new 'Safer Homes in Somerset' initiative, a musical called 'Tricksters' will be performed in The Princess Hall in town on February 27th.
Awards for gym club leaders
TWO LEADERS of a Burnham-On-Sea gymnastics club have this week been presented with awards to mark their commitment to the group. Bristol Rugby Club player Lee Robinson presented awards to two of the long-standing Burnham-On-Sea Monarchs Gymnastics Club leaders.
Town's double-yellow howler!
A BURNHAM-On-Sea resident could hardly believe his eyes when he spotted double-yellow lines had been painted right across the entrance to a road in the town! The County Council has recently re-painted the lines along Oxford Street but has seemingly made a gaffe.
Grant windfalls for town groups
MORE than a dozen community groups from across Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge received grant cheques from the town council this week. Members of 14 groups gathered in the town council chambers in Jaycroft Road to be handed their grant cheques by Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Eric Gill.
Mini golf course for seafront?
A NEW mini-golf complex could be opened up on Burnham-On-Sea's seafront this spring, according to proposals unveiled this week. RG Entertainment - which currently runs the trampolines on Burnham Beach - wants to set up a nine-hole crazy golf course opposite Quantock Court.
Council opens talks on Princess
BURNHAM-On-Sea town councillors have voted in favour of opening talks with the district council on the possibility of taking over the management of the town's closure-threatened Princess Hall. On Monday (February 6th) they decided to "show an interest" and to commence talks.

Police bid to trace shoplifter
POLICE have released a photo of a lady they want to speak to in connection with a shoplifting incident at a Burnham-On-Sea supermarket. The woman has long, blonde straight hair and is aged in her mid-20s. She is shown pushing a toddler in a blue pushchair through an aisle.
£4,500 boost from Bristol City
BRISTOL City Football Club has given Burnham-On-Sea's Spirit of Lelaina hovercraft a major financial boost by handing over £4,500 to help it continue saving lives along the Somerset coastline. The huge amount was presented to BARB on Friday, February 3rd, at Bristol City's football ground.
Fears for Burnham pet shops
FEARS are growing that a brand new pet centre being opened at Sanders Garden World, near Burnham-On-Sea, next month will hit trade at pet shops in the town. The garden centre has announced it is expanding its product range to include a wide range of pet and aquatic products.

Police plea after mail is stolen
POLICE have appealed for help in identifying a man after the theft of two mail bags in Burnham-On-Sea. A photo of the man was released on Wednesday (February 1st) in a bid to track down the man after the theft took place last week at a garage on Berrow Road in Burnham.
Fire crews tackle Brean blaze
THREE fire crews from Burnham-On-Sea and Glastonbury tackled a big blaze at Brean in the early hours of Wednesday February 1st. The fire at a barn in Warren Road was reported to the fire service shortly after 6.15am when the building was reported to be "well alight". It was completely destroyed in the fire.
101-year-old joins pool fight
ONE of Burnham-On-Sea's oldest residents celebrated her 101st birthday on Tuesday (January 31st) by taking a dip in the town's swimming pool and joining the high-profile campaign to keep the facility open. The spritely resident was the centre of media attention at the event.

BURNHAM-On-Sea RNLI has received a cash boost thanks to the fundraising efforts of a Cheddar company who took part in the latest RNLI 'SOS' Day. The fun-loving staff at Connaught Service Force wore novelty shoes to work in support of the RNLI's annual SOS fundraising day.
Air ambulance called to crash
A 21-year-old motorist was rushed to hospital by air ambulance on Monday morning (January 30th) after fire crews had to cut her free from her car when it crashed into a ditch near Burnham-On-Sea. Fire crews from Burnham-On-Sea and Glastonbury were called to Harp Lane near the Fox & Goose restaurant.

STAFF at Sanders Garden World, near Burnham-On-Sea, are celebrating this wek after the centre was presented with a national gardening award. Directors and staff have been given the title of the UK’s ‘favourite garden centre’ by the national weekly publication Garden News.
Cash pours in for cancer man
MORE than £2,000 has been raised by local groups in Burnham and the surrounding area to help a local man fight cancer. A cheque for £2,090.35 was handed over to the Cancer Research organisation on Saturday by big-hearted supporters who have held a series of events in recent weeks.

A RALLY team from Devon had a lucky escape when their Ford Escort spun off the road into a ditch during an action-packed first day at the 2006 Regency Stages Rally in Brean on Saturday January 28th. Steve Hollis and Sarah Carcillo were lucky to walk away from the scene with just a bruised ego.
Town marks Holocaust Day
DOZENS of local people gathered besides the Frank Foley Statue in Highbridge on Friday to mark World Holocaust Day. Organised by the Highbridge Memorial Trust, the ceremony in Market Street was attended by local dignataries including Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Eric Gill.
Oil spill prompts river clean-up
A BIG clean-up operation is under way on part of the River Brue near Burnham-On-Sea after an estimated 100 gallons of oil spilled into the river. The Environment Agency has been using 60ft booms to contain the oil which appeared to have leaked from a premises in Bason Bridge.
Major refurb for Tourist Centre
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Tourist Information Centre is to get a new look in time for the 2006 tourist season. Sedgemoor District Council is about to begin a major refurbishment of the seafront building. It opened more than 15 years ago and has received a million visitors in that time.
High-flying girls visit Brean!
THE world’s only formation wing-walking team will take to the skies above Brean Leisure Park this weekend during the village's annual rally. The glamorous 'Utterly Butterlys' - who are sponsored by a brand of butter - will perform a 12-minute display in the skies above the village on Sunday.

THE possibility of a large continental market coming to Burnham seafront this summer moved a step closer this week. Town Centre Manager Anne-Marie Spalding revealed she has held "positive" talks with a leading market operator about a two to three day event this summer.
New group backs wind farm
A NEW Burnham-On-Sea pressure group has been formed to support renewable energy and back the controversial plans to build a huge wind farm at Brent Knoll. The organisation - FORCE (Families for Clean Energy) - has been set up by a group of ten residents in the town.
Cash boost for fire-hit club
FIRE-hit Berrow Football Club received a much-needed double financial boost this week when more than £2,000 was raised at a big fundraising concert in Brean and a local brewery began selling a special new beer to raise further cash. The money will go towards replacing lost equipment.
Town's shipping traffic up 10%
OFFICIAL figures out this week show the number of cargo ships passing Burnham-On-Sea on their way to Dunball and Bridgwater increased by almost ten per cent during 2005. The stats show 85 large vessels passed Burnham-On-sea last year, compared to 79 in 2004.
Two-car accident on seafront
TWO vehicles were badly damaged after colliding in an accident on Burnham's seafront on Sunday evening, January 22nd. Burnham-On-Sea Police were called to The Esplanade, near the Sailing Club, at around 6.10pm after the crash was reported to them. The road was not cleared until 7.15pm.
Hovercraft flies pair to safety
A YOUNG couple walking in treacherous mud almost a mile from the shore at Brean have been brought back to safety by Burnham's hovercraft. The craft and its crew were training in the area on Saturday January 21st when a member of the public spotted the pair walking to the sea at low tide.
BBC TV man to open RNLI shop
WORKMEN have been busy making final adjustments to Burnham-On-Sea's brand new lifeboat station shop, which is set to be officially opened by BBC TV sports presenter John Inverdale during February. The shop is situated on the seafront next to Sunspot Amusements and will also be open over the school half-term.
Hinkley smoke was false alarm
FIRE services were alerted on Saturday morning (January 21st) after residents in Burnham-On-Sea reported seeing plumes of 'smoke' over Hinkley Point power station. A tall pillar of 'white smoke' was visible for miles around Bridgwater Bay - but it turned out to be a false alarm when it was put down to harmless steam.
Now our fireworks are at risk
SEDGEMOOR District Council is considering cancelling Burnham's annual beach fireworks display as part of its ongoing cost-cutting initiative. The popular event attracts thousands of people each November and is the curtain raiser for the town's annual carnival celebrations.
Car crash blacks out 80 homes
POWER was cut to dozens of homes on the outskirts of Burnham-On-Sea this week when a car crashed into a pole and brought down electricity cables. Police were called to the scene between Highbridge Caravan Sales and the Alstone Road junction on January 17th.
New loyalty scheme unveiled

A NEW mobile phone shop is moving into Burnham-On-Sea High Street this week and is scheduled to open on Saturday. JAG Communications, which has more than 75 stores throughout the UK, is moving into the premises on the corner of the High Street and Cross Street.
Siege police officers honoured
NINE police officers who were fire-bombed while dealing with a dramatic siege in Burnham-On-Sea during 2004 have been honoured at an awards ceremony this week. The officers were called to a house in Oxford Street when a man barricaded himself inside and threatened them.

BURNHAM-On-Sea's Princess Hall could be shut down unless a new local organisation or the town council takes it on, we can reveal. As part of a cost-cutting exercise at Sedgemoor District Council, the authority is seeking to find different organisations to manage the building.
Bulls trapped in road crash
A VEHICLE towing a trailer with three bulls onboard overturned during an accident on the A38 at Rooksbridge, near Burnham-On-Sea, on Monday January 16th. Fire crews were to the scene after it emerged that the trailer contained three bulls - one of which died at the roadside after escaping.
Top award for Burnham pool
BURNHAM-On-Sea swimming pool has received a top leisure facility award, just days after bosses at the Berrow Road facility began a search for new owners to take it on. The pool passed an inspection on the 10th and 11th of January, gaining top marks from the inspectors.
Police in photo appeal after M5 theft
POLICE are appealing for help in identifying three men who may have been involved in a theft from a fruit machine at the M5 Sedgemoor Services near Burnham-On-Sea. Avon and Somerset Police have released photos of the three men caught on CCTV cameras and are asking the public to contact Crimestoppers.
Burnham house prices to rise
BURNHAM-On-Sea's property prices are predicted to show small increases during 2006, according to a survey from one of the UK's leading property value forecasters. It believes the cost of homes in both of Burnham's postcode areas will rise during the year. We have full details.
