£650m barrage plan unveiled
A HUGE £650 million project to build a barrage between Brean Down and Lavernock Point in Wales has been submitted to district planners this week. Burnham-On-Sea.com spoke to Gareth Woodham, the wealthy entrepreneur who is behind the project, which will link England and Wales.

STAFF and customers at Sanders Garden World, near Burnham-On-Sea, will be celebrating the garden centre’s fifth birthday next week, March 14th. The centre has played host to more than five million customers since opening in March 2001 and is marking its anniversary with several events.

Vehicle stolen from Burnham street
THIEVES drove away an expensive people carrier vehicle from central Burnham-On-Sea on Tuesday night, February 28th. The vehicle was stolen from a parking area in Cross Street, near The Esplanade, between 7pm and 10.45pm. Police conducted enquiries in the area on Wednesday and are appealing for information.
Burnham scoops lotto windfall
MEMBERS of the Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Regeneration Partnership are celebrating after securing a huge grant from the Big Lottery fund for almost £127,000. The money will be used to help the regeneration of the towns through the appointment of a person to oversee the work.
Police appeal for witnesses
BURNHAM-On-Sea Police are appealing for witnesses to a frightening burglary that happened on the outskirts of the town on Monday night, February 27th. It happened at 9pm when two men smashed the glass front door of a pensioner's bungalow in East Brent, leaving her understandably very frightened.
Wind farm 'accident threat'
A SET of photos showing what can happen when wind turbines encounter problems has been released by the pressure group fighting a proposed wind farm on the outskirts of Burnham-On-Sea. The 'KNOll to Wind Farm' pressure group says the turbines pose a risk to people in the area.
BBC man opens new RNLI shop
BURNHAM-On-Sea RNLI officially opened its new seafront lifeboat shop on Monday, February 27th, when crowds of people went along to watch BBC TV presenter John Inverdale (pictured) cut the tape to open the new shop. Dozens of onlookers and VIPs watched the seafront ceremony.
Public toilets could be closed
PEOPLE in Burnham-On-Sea could be caught short if plans to close public toilets in the town get the go-ahead. The District Council's Policy Review and Service Improvement Committee says loos at the Yacht Club, BARB building and Seaview Road could be shut if cash is not found.
Boys in blue have pitch battle!
BURNHAM-On-Sea Police faced off against Highbridge Town Football Club on Sunday afternoon (February 26th) when the two teams met in a charity football match to raise money for a local youth club. The event was held at Highbridge Recreation Ground to raise for a new centre in the town.
St John awards for youngsters
MORE than 100 youngsters from across Somerset gathered in Highbridge on Saturday to compete in a St John Ambulance competition. The children, aged between 5 and 16, gathered for the first round of the St John Ambulance Cadets and Badgers Competition.
Police swoop on town street
POLICE swooped on a quiet back street in Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday morning, February 25th. Tape marked 'Crime Scene' was put around a green waste container at the back of GW Hurleys in an area known as Phoenix Toe, not far from Technical Street - much to the fascination of nearby residents.
Matt in final five on TV show
BURNHAM-On-Sea fashion student Matt Bowkett sailed through to the next round of Sky One's reality TV show Project Catwalk this week. After several nervous episodes where it looked as though the 21-year-old could be eliminated, he won this week's episode and make it through to the final five.
RNLI is ready to open new shop
BURNHAM-On-Sea RNLI has announced more details about the official opening of its lifeboat shop, which will be officially performed by the BBC's John Inverdale (pictured) on Monday February 27th. The shop will also be open from Saturday February 11th at 10am for the sale of souvenirs.

THE sighting of several hundred metres of turquoise-coloured fluid floating on top of a river at Burnham-On-Sea sparked fears of a pollution incident this week. But the Environment Agency said the substance is actually harmless and poses no risk to the environment.

SEAFRONT residents in Burnham-On-Sea have called on town councillors to crackdown on skateboarders who use The Esplanade. Residents told the Town Improvements Commitee this week that the issue had "got out of hand" and "prompt action" was needed to stem the problem.
'Crimewatch' appeal by police
HUNDREDS of thousands of pounds of jewellery recovered from a travellers site at Highbridge appeared on the BBC1 show Crimewatch on Wednesday night (February 22nd) in a bid to trace the owners. The jewellery was recovered during a warrant last August and is believed to be stolen.
Frightening attack on boys
BURNHAM-On-Sea police have appealed for witnesses to come forward after a 14-year-old boy and his friend were the victims of a frightening attack by a gang of men in the town this week. Matthew Lewis, 14, was left with bruises and scratches on his face and neck after the incident.
Driver injured in M5 accident
A BMW driver had a lucky escape when his car crashed into a ditch at a motorway services near Burnham-On-Sea on Monday lunchtime. The man lost control of his vehicle while driving on the slipway into the northbound Sedgemoor Services at around mid-day, but he got away wit minor injuries.

Horse rider injured at Berrow
A HORSE rider was injured in an accident on Berrow Beach on Sunday afternoon, February 19th. Burnham-On-Sea Coastguard officers joined police and paramedics in rushing to the scene after the woman was thrown from the animal onto hard sand at 12.30pm. She was rushed to Weston General Hospital.
Lifeboat crews rescue sailor
TWO lifeboats from Burnham-On-Sea were scrambled on Sunday morning, February 19th, after a dinghy with one person onboard began sinking at Brean. 23-year-old Tanya Tucker from Cossington was safely brought back to shore, along with her craft, after she got into difficulties.

M5 crash causes snarl-up
MOTORISTS faced long delays on the M5 motorway near Burnham-On-Sea on Friday evening, February 17th, following an accident involving a lorry. Oil was spilt over two lanes of the carriageway after a lorry crashed into the central barrier near junction 23 at Pawlett - leaving motorists with long queues.
Band's tribute concert for Jon

Crash victim named by police

A TEAM of animal experts is being drafted in to manage Sanders Garden World's new Pet and Aquatic Centre, which is set to open in March. Pauline Kidner, Founder of Secret World wildlife rescue centre, will officially open the brand new centre on Saturday March 11th at 10am.
Vandals attack Burnham shop
VANDALS attacked a High Street shop in Burnham-On-Sea in the early hours of Saturday, February 11th. A glass door at the front of Peacocks was smashed, leaving managers to clean up shards of broken glass and also fork out money for an expensive replacement door.
Top TV chefs coming to Brean
THREE top TV celebrity chefs are coming to Brean this March to perform cookery demonstrations and workshops at a popular food fayre. Lesley Waters, Ed Baines and Martin Blunos will appear at the 2006 Somerset Food Fayre at Brean Leisure Park, near Burnham-On-Sea.

Woman killed in car accident
A WOMAN was killed in a car accident near Burnham-On-Sea on Thursday evening (February 9th). Police and paramedics from Burnham rushed to the accident scene near the corner of Harp Lane and the Mark Causeway after the vehicle careered off the road into a tree during the rush hour.
Wells concert for local children
SCHOOLCHILDREN from Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge are to sing alongside the BBC Singers and 240 other pupils from across Somerset during a special concert in Wells Cathedral. The pupils will join with the BBC Singers to perform 'Waters of Time' during the special event in March.

Flu bug hits Burnham pupils
MORE than 500 children and staff have been hit by a flu bug in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge, it emerged this week. Hundreds of the pupils and teachers have called in absent each day last week after an outbreak of influenza and respiratory illness. The bug first began to strike in January.
