Pubs prepare for smoking ban
PUBS across Burnham-On-Sea are getting ready for the introduction of next summer's nationwide smoking ban. Chaplins on The Esplanade has spent more than £5,000 on building a new extension to its premises - and other pubs are following suit.
Boxing Day blaze extinguished
THOUSANDS of pounds of damage was caused to a car and garage during a fire at Rooksbridge on Boxing Day evening. Firefighters from Burnham-On-Sea and Cheddar gained entry to a domestic garage in the village after the blaze broke out at 8.02pm.
Armed police swoop on Burnham street
ARMED police sealed off a Burnham-On-Sea road on Christmas Day afternoon as they investigated a serious disturbance at a flat. Abingdon Street in the centre of Burnham was closed from around 4.30pm when residents told Burnham-On-Sea.com they saw officers surrounding a shop.
Festive finance boost from pub
A TRIO of worthy causes in Burnham-On-Sea have been handed a festive financial boost by a local fundraising group. The Somerset and Dorset Pub's Local Emergency Services Fund handed out three £500 cheques this week after a year of successful money-raising.
Boost for farmers markets
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Farmers Markets are to continue during January, February and March, it was announced this week. The popular markets - which are held in the High Street - were due to take a winter break until April 2007 but have now been extended.

A MOTORCYCLIST was rushed to hospital on Sunday morning (December 24th) after an accident closed Burnham-On-Sea's Marine Drive. A red Kia pulling out of Apex Leisure Park is believed to have collided with the motorcycle just after 11.30am, shutting the road for 30 minutes.
Carols for last-minute shoppers
LAST-minute Christmas shoppers in Burnham were treated to a line-up of festive carols from a town drama group on Sunday morning, December 24th. BEES (Burnham Excellent Entertainment Society) sang a line-up of carols and festive music at the town's Tesco store.
Shoppers dig deep for fire fund
COLLECTION tins were rattling when Burnham-On-Sea firefighters raised more than a thousand pounds for the Fire Services Benevolent Fund this week. Generous High Street shoppers dug deep into their pockets and purses to raise a bumper sum of £1,375.
Motorist causes two accidents
A MOTORIST travelled the wrong way down the M5 between Pawlett and Burnham-On-Sea, causing two accidents and leaving the motorway closed for more than two hours on Friday night (December 22nd). Police, fire crews and paramedics rushed to the southbound carriageway of the M5 at 8pm.
Sea swimmers ready for dip!
PLUCKY volunteers from Burnham will be braving the waters of the English Channel next Saturday (December 30th) to raise funds for local charity Secret World. The volunteers will pull on a range of costumes as they perform their annual sea swim at Lyme Regis.
Tree storm repairs completed
WORK was completed this week on making safe a huge tree in Burnham-On-Sea which was damaged during the recent storms. Sedgemoor Disrict Council, which owns some of the land at Gardenhurst, has been busy ensuring that none of the higher branches could come down.

Hinkley re-opening is delayed
HINKLEY Point B, near Burnham-On-Sea, will not return to operation until March, the power station operator British Energy said on Thursday (Dec 21st). The company had said earlier this week that one of the reactors at the plant would be back in operation by January.

OFFICIAL figures from Burnham-On-Sea Police show crime in the town has increased significantly during the past year, although November showed a slight fall. The new figures demonstrate how monthly crime during 2006 has been consistently higher than in 2005.
Chip pan blamed for blaze
A CHIP pan is being blamed for a blaze at a Highbridge home on Wednesday night (December 20th). A Burnham-On-Sea fire crew attended a property fire in Morland Road at 9.52pm to find smoke pouring out of the house. Fortunately, the blaze was quickly extinguished.
School's VIP cinema screening

Road closes after accident
A BUSY Burnham-On-Sea road was closed for over two hours on Tuesday morning (Dec 19th) after a two-vehicle accident. Police and paramedics rushed to Stoddens Lane just after 8am after a Toyota car and a lorry collided on a stretch of the road near a railway bridge.
Race Night tickets on sale
TICKETS have gone on sale this week for a fundraising event to help Burnham's ambulance station upgrade some of its specialist equipment. The race night will be held on January 27th at Lakeside in Westfield Road and aims to raise £3,000 to upgrade equipment used by Burnham paramedics.
Hinkley to re-open in January
ONE of the reactors at Hinkley Point B power station, near Burnham-On-Sea, is on track to return to partial operation during the next fortnight. British Energy said on Monday (Dec 18th) that its work is on track and one of the reactors will be operational by January.
Workers repair jetty damage
URGENT repairs were carried out to the navigation beacon at the end of Burnham-On-Sea's slipway on Monday (December 18th) after a bolt came lose during recent storms and left the structure in a precarious condition. The work was completed over four hours.

SHELL collectors wandering along Burnham's beach have been rewarded with some impressive finds this week after the recent heavy storms. The gales have resulted in a wider than normal range of shells being washed up along several parts of the town's shoreline.

ANGRY residents in a Burnham-On-Sea street were beginning a clean-up operation on Saturday morning (December 16th) after vandals caused damage in the area. Several concrete flower pots were removed from the front gardens of properties along Worston Road before being smashed on pavements.

OVER £600 was raised for charity when Burnham-On-Sea Rotary Club members held an unusual fundraising competition at Highbridge Fatstock Market. Visitors to the market were encouraged to guess the distance between the horn tips of a huge steer.
Coroner names beach body
THE West Somerset Coroner said on Thursday (Dec 14th) that the body of a man found on Berrow Beach, near Burnham-On-Sea, last weekend had been identified. A spokesman said analysis of finger prints had confirmed that the man was a 60 year-old from near Cardiff.
CCTV appeal follows M5 theft
POLICE have issued a photo of two men who they think may be able to help them with their enquiries into the theft of money from several fruit machines at the M5 Sedgemoor Services, near Burnham-On-Sea. One of the men is white, in his early 20s and 5'6"-5'8" tall.
Town Council 'may move to Princess'
BURNHAM-On-Sea and Highbridge Town Council may move from its current home in Jaycroft Road into the newly-acquired Princess Hall in the centre of town. The move is one of several options on the table after yesterday's news that months of talks about the future of the hall had come to a successful conclusion.

A MAN was arrested after failing a breath test following a two-car accident in Queen's Drive, Burnham-On-Sea, on Tuesday morning (Dec 12th). Motorists travelling out of the town towards the M5 faced lengthy delays after the accident, which happened at 8.20am.
Town railway station re-opens
THERE was good news for commuters who use Highbridge & Burnham-On-Sea Railway Station on Monday (Dec 11th) when a three week closure to renew tracks was completed on time. During the work, six miles of rail, 26,000 tonnes of ballast and 10 points were renewed.

Bowling club bids to extend opening hours
A controversial application to extend opening times until 2am at Burnham-On-Sea Bowling Club is set to be decided by Sedgemoor District Council's Licensing and Registration Committee this week. The town's bowling club, in St Andrew's Road, wants to extend its opening hours from 11.30pm to 2am.
Poor turnout at regeneration AGM
FEWER than 25 people attended the annual general meeting of the Burnham and Highbridge Regeneration Partnership this week when the group gave an update on improvements to the area. Regeneration Partnership chairman Mike Murphy (pictured) led the meeting.

Mayor opens new learning centre
A NEW Active Living Centre for people aged over 50 was opened in Burnham-On-Sea on Friday December 8th by the town's Mayor. The facility, overseen by Somerset County Council and Age Concern, was launched at Burnham's Community Centre by Cllr Eric Gill.
