Garden thieves strike again
A BED and breakfast owner in Burnham-On-Sea has hit out at thieves who have stolen ornaments from his garden for the TENTH time in two years. Colin Jones of Ashbourne House B&B in Berrow Road says a dozen hand-painted ornaments were stolen over the weekend.
Unitary council moves closer
SOMERSET County Council moved a step closer to abolishing Sedgemoor District Council when it passed a motion on Wednesday (November 22nd) instructing officers to work on a bid and submission to create a unitary council. The motion passed by a majority of nine.
Warning over imitation guns
POLICE in Burnham-On-Sea are warning parents not to be tempted to buy imitation weapons for their children this Christmas. Many outlets are now selling the look-alike firearms which often differ very little from the real deadly weapons which can cause accidents and injuries.
Three schools hit by break-ins
POLICE are helping schools in Highbridge to tighten up their security after three separate incidents in a fortnight where criminal damage has been caused and property stolen, police said on Wednesday morning (November 22nd). The incidents have angered teachers.
Land yachts blow into Brean
STRONG winds provided ideal conditions for more than 25 land yachting enthusiasts when they gathered on Brean Beach, near Burnham-On-Sea, for their annual regatta over the weekend. A series of five races were held over two days on November 18th and 19th.

Boats warned as barge visits

BURNHAM-On-Sea Town Council was presented with a cheque for almost £1,200 on Monday night (Nov 20th) following a successful charity collection held during the recent seafront fireworks display. Burnham Rotary Club collected an impressive total of £2,978.91.
Hula hoop fun raises £1,200
A CIRCUS troupe hosted a hula hoop challenge to raise money for the BBC's annual Children in Need at Sanders Garden World near Burnham-On-Sea on Friday. A group of clowns and hula hoopers from Circus Americano took part in the sponsored event, raising £1,200.
Man loses High Court legal row
A BIZARRE High Court parking row has left a Burnham-On-Sea man facing a legal bill of thousands of pounds. Howard Rhys Jones may now be unable to park in the garage of his Oxford Street home after losing a claim to right of way over a small area of hard standing.
Hinkley to re-open in January
REACTORS at Hinkley Point power station near Burnham-On-Sea will re-open in January, it was announced by British Energy on Friday. Both the station's two advanced gas-cooled reactors are currently shut down after cracks were found in a reactor's graphite core and boiler pipes.

Controversial path to re-open
A LONG-running campaign by Burnham-On-Sea residents to have a blocked-off path officially re-opened has been successful. The path running behind the town's Catholic Church, between Highbridge Road and Marine Drive, was blocked off by the church several years ago.

Roger takes to the sea again!
A BRIDGWATER man whose sinking fishing boat was rescued from the bottom of the River Brue earlier this autumn was back sailing in Bridgwater Bay this week for the first time since the incident. Roger Geach, 58, hit the headlines in September after his boat sank.
Police name M5 fall victim
POLICE have named the woman who died on the M5 motorway near Burnham-On-Sea's Sedgemoor Services last Friday morning, November 11th. Joan Harrill, 77, of Cheddar was pronounced dead at the scene following an apparent fall from an overbridge over the northbound carriageway.
Remembrance Day marked
MORE than 200 dignitaries, former service personnel and representatives from local groups gathered at Burnham-On-Sea's war memorial on Sunday morning, November 12th, to mark Remembrance Day. Wreaths were laid by Mayor Eric Gill and leaders of other groups.
Seafront gets £22k revamp
BURNHAM-On-Sea's seafront has been given a £22,000 face-lift during the last fortnight. Work to spruce up seating shelters and redecorate metal work was completed on Friday. The project included an overhaul of roofs, the replacement of facias and metal work.
Brean Rally ready to roar!
ORGANISERS of the annual Brean Stages Rally have this week announced details of their 2007 event. The popular rally, which is now in its 11th year, will be held over three days in late January and will once again be held at Brean Leisure Park. Entries open shortly.

BURNHAM-On-Sea war veterans and local residents joined millions of people across the UK in remembering those who died in the two world wars during a two-minute silence to mark Armistice Day on Saturday (Nov 11th). A ceremony was held in the High Street.
Traffic chaos on M5 as body is found
THE body of a woman has been found on the M5 near Burnham-On-Sea, prompting the temporary closure of the motorway on Friday (November 10th). Avon and Somerset police said she was discovered at 6.05am on the stretch between Burnham and Weston.
Highbridge welcomes new store
A LARGE convenience store is set to open in the centre of Highbridge in the next few days, providing the town with a welcome boost. Final interior work is underway to allow the One Stop store in Market Street, pictured, near the town's Community Hall, to open.
Town couple's golden gesture
A KIND gesture by two members of Burnham-On-Sea's Moose International Lodge resulted in a cheque for £250 being handed over to the Babe Appeal this week. Moose members David and Maggie Gully asked friends and family to help celebrate their Golden wedding.

BURNHAM-On-Sea's brand new £12,500 Christmas lights were winched into position along the town's High Street on Thursday morning (Nov 9th). It comes as more details were announced about the big switch-on being planned for later this month.
Police arrest wanted man
BURNHAM-On-Sea police have arrested a Bristol man wanted in connection with an incident in Pier Street where a motorist fled from officers after being pulled over for questioning. A 19-year-old was caught in the town's Somerfield car park on Tuesday (Nov 7th).
Sea water quality praised
SEA water quality in Burnham, Brean and Berrow has been given the stamp of approval by DEFRA (The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) in a national survey announced on Thursday November 9th. Bathing water quality was tested during a nationwide survey.
Fire crews called to Highbridge blaze
BURNHAM-On-Sea fire fighters tackled a small blaze at a commercial premises in Highbridge on Wednesday lunchtime (November 8th). The alarm was raised by a haulage company on the Walrow Industrial Estate at 12.04pm after several lorry trailers caught fire.

Fuel theft suspect wanted
BURNHAM-On-Sea police have issued photos of a motorist they believe may have stolen petrol from a Brent Knoll filling station. Police are appealing for help in identifying a white man with very short dark hair who was wearing a yellow fluorescent jacket - as pictured.
Tesco unveils expansion plan
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Tesco supermarket is pressing ahead with plans to extend its Love Lane site despite controversially losing a bid to expand its store earlier this year. The supermarket has this week unveiled proposals to extend its car park by over 70 spaces.

POLICE are appealing for information after a disturbing incident in Highbridge in which an 18-year-old woman was approached by a stranger. The incident happened at around 11.30am on Saturday morning (November 4th) as the woman walked along Church Street.
Indian fundraising trek for Mike
A BURNHAM-On-Sea man is set to climb the peaks of India next summer to raise money for a good cause. Mike Barsby, who is a well known face about town, will trek with fellow participants for five days in Ladakh India amidst the Himalayas to raise money for disability charity Scope.

LARGE crowds of up to 35,000 people are expected for the annual Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Carnival on Monday evening (Nov 6th). Dozens of carnival floats have already arrived in Burnham for the annual event, which boasts over 103 entries.
Rail users warned of disruption
PASSENGERS using Highbridge & Burnham railway station have been warned to expect disruption over the next two months as repair work costing millions of pounds gets started. Network Rail will renew miles of track between the Burnham and Bridgwater stations.
Man injured in fog accident
CARNIVAL traffic coming into Burnham from Berrow was being held up on Monday evening (Nov 6th) after an accident in thick fog on the Berrow Road. A man was taken to hospital with back injuries after being struck by a vehicle near the Warren Guest House at 5.30pm.

DOZENS of huge carnival floats arrived in Burnham-On-Sea during the early hours of Sunday (Nov 5th) after travelling along the A38 to the town after Saturday's North Petherton carnival. A long snake of floats gathered along Queen's Drive (pictured) and the Frank Foley Parkway.
Legion members at memorial
MORE than 20 members of Burnham's Royal British Legion gathered at the town's war memorial on Sunday (Nov 5th) to mark the rededication of the memorial in preparation for next Sunday's remembrance service. Prayers were led by acting chaplain, the Revd Ken Piper.
River Brue oil spill is contained
ENVIRONMENT Agency bosses have contained a large oil spill in the River Brue at Highbridge after a major operation on Saturday (Nov 4th) to prevent the pollution spreading. Agency officials said the diesel oil appeared to have spilled into the river through a water inlet.
Fireworks launch pad is ready!
A HUGE platform sprouted up on Burnham-On-Sea's jetty on Saturday (Nov 4th) as workmen prepared to use it as the launch pad for Sunday night's annual fireworks spectacular. Workers spent much of Saturday constructing the huge structure, which attracted onlookers.
RBL's appeal for poppy sellers
MORE volunteers are needed by the Royal British Legion to sell poppies in Burnham-On-Sea this week. The town branch needs additional people to come forward in order to help in the run-up to this year's Remembrance Day service next Sunday (November 12th).
French market returns to town
BURNHAM-On-Sea residents will be able to stock up on continental food when an outdoor French market comes to the town on Sunday (Nov 5th). Fourteen stalls will be set up on the seafront from 10am to 4.30pm selling a wide range of continental items.
Smoke grenade attack on restaurant
BURNHAM-On-Sea police made an appeal for witnesses on Friday (Nov 3rd) after revealing that a smoke grenade had been thrown into a crowded Chinese restaurant in the town earlier this week. Police said the incident at a High Street restaurant happened on Tuesday.
Concern grows for missing man
POLICE are growing increasingly concerned for the safety of a man who is believed to have jumped into the River Parrett on Thursday (Nov 2nd). At around 11.30am a member of the public reported seeing the man jumping from Somerset Bridge into the fast-flowing river below.
Fears on 'over-development'
PLANS to build more than 200 new homes in Highbridge have this week been given a chilly reception after planners objected to the two schemes, which they claim will lead to over development and traffic safety problems. Councillors objected to the proposals.
Trust's anger at fort vandals
ANGRY National Trust bosses have this week hit out at graffiti vandals who have struck at historic Brean Down Fort near Burnham-On-Sea. The vandals attacked one of the former gun emplacements at the southern side of the Fort, leaving the Trust with a clean-up.
