Poor bloom result for town
THERE was disappointment for Burnham-On-Sea this week when the town came bottom in its category in the South West in Bloom awards. The announcement came at a special ceremony in St Ives on Friday evening (September 21st) when Burnham was named ninth out of ten.
Mark's off on 35,000 mile race
BURNHAM-On-Sea yacht skipper Mark Preedy has set sail on a nine month race around the world. Mark, 35, was chosen earlier this year to skipper Uniquely Singapore, one of the flotilla of yachts taking part in the 35,000-mile Clipper Race which set sail from Liverpool last week.
Crowds flock to hall's open day
CROWDS of local people flocked to Morland Community Hall in Highbridge on Saturday (September 22nd) when it threw open its doors for a special open day. Visitors were able to see for themselves what facilities the hall offers and also give their opinions about its future.
Civic awards board unveiled
A NEW commemorative board which lists the name of every person to have received a Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Civic Award during the last 21 years has been unveiled this week. The wooden board is now in the town council's Jaycroft Road chambers.
Vintage poster sells for £660
THIS vintage poster promoting Burnham-On-Sea as an ideal holiday destination was sold for £660 when it was auctioned in London this week. The Burnham poster - produced by British Railways in or around 1961 - was expected to sell for £300- £500 at the Christies sale.
New role for seafront lights
SEVERAL of Burnham-On-Sea's decorative seafront illuminations which were not destroyed in last January's storms will be seen around the streets of Burnham and Highbridge this Christmas. Burnham-On-Sea.com learns the town's two Chamber of Trade groups have this week bought over 20 illuminations.

A BURNHAM-On-Sea zapcat team has got high hopes of success as it gears up for the final four rounds of the Zapcat National Championships in Newquay this weekend. East Huntspill's Ryan Jones and Ashley Chappell, pictured, will be taking to the Cornish waters.
New Carnival Queen unveiled
BURNHAM-On-Sea and Highbridge Carnival's 2007 Queen was chosen in a special ceremony on Friday evening (September 14th). Kayley Elton, aged 15, and from Burnham was selected by a panel of judges during the ceremony held at Brean.
Walrow bridge re-open at last
THE long-awaited re-opening of Highbridge's controversial Walrow railway bridge went ahead on Friday morning (September 14th). A brief ceremony was held at the site to mark the re-opening after a six month closure of the bridge caused by concerns over strength.
Vandals leave trail of damage
VANDALS smashed the window of a telephone box and attacked several gardens during a spate of night-time attacks in Burnham-On-Sea earlier this week. Several residents along Berrow Road reported a spate of incidents on Tuesday evening (September 11th).
Green flag raised at Apex Park
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Apex Leisure and Wildlife Park has been awarded Green Flag status for the first time this year, and to mark the occasion an official flag raising ceremony was held at the park this week. The ceremony, held on Tuesday, publicised the award.

Asda roundabout open at last!
Eight months of disruptive roadworks in Highbridge finally came to an end on Friday morning (August 31st) when a new supermarket roundabout was opened. Work to construct the new road layout outside the soon-to-open Asda supermarket was finally completed and the road was opened at 7am.
FolkFest 2007 starts on Friday
OVER 100 hours of live music and dance will be held in pubs and other venues across Burnham-On-Sea this weekend when the town's annual folk festival gets underway. Folkfest 2007 runs from 31st August to 2nd September and features non-stop music acts and entertainment.
Highbridge hall holds open day
MORLAND Community Hall and Highbridge Community Youth Club are throwing open their doors for a special open day during September. On Saturday September 22nd visitors are being welcomed to the hall to see for themselves what facilities it offers and also to give their opinions on what events should be held there.
Two arrests by Burnham police
TWO people have been arrested in Burnham-On-Sea during a crackdown on anti-social behaviour and underage drinking in the town. Police increased their patrols in a pro-active operation as part of their ongoing county-wide Operation Relentless campaign.
Vintage poster up for auction
A VINTAGE poster advertising Burnham-On-Sea as an ideal holiday destination is expected to sell for between £300 and £500 when it is auctioned in London next month. The poster, emblazoned with the words 'Come to Burnham for sea, sand and sun', features a tanned lady.
Carnival queen search begins
THE search for a carnival queen and princesses to lead this year's Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Carnival has begun this week. The annual competition to choose a queen and two princesses will be held on Friday, September 14th at Unity Farm in Brean Leisure Park.
Folkfest scoops lotto windfall!
DELIGHTED organisers of Burnham-On-Sea's annual Folkfest event are celebrating this week after securing a £7,000 grant from the National Lottery. The windfall has come in time to boost this year's event, which gets underway across the town next week.

Stert Island Swim cancelled
ORGANISERS of Burnham-On-Sea's annual Stert Island Swim called off the event after strong winds whipped up big waves in the channel on Sunday (August 19th). The race was cancelled for the first time ever by organisers as they agreed that the conditions were too dangerous in the channel.
Beachfront flats plan rejected
MULTI-million pound plans to replace this house with a three-storey block of 14 apartments on Burnham-On-Sea's beachfront have been turned down by planners. The application at 17 Allandale Road would have seen the demolition of the current property.
Anti-social behaviour tackled
A CLAMPDOWN on anti-social behaviour in Burnham-On-Sea has started this week with two new poster campaigns being launched. Burnham police have put up posters in several spots along The Esplanade, as pictured, warning people that "urinating in a public place is an offence."
Roadworks cause more delays
MOTORISTS faced long delays through Highbridge on Friday (August 17th) when the A38 was partially closed by ongoing work to build a new supermarket roundabout. The busy route came to a standstill while one lane of the road was closed for construction work.
Bus shelter gets makeover
THOUSANDS of pounds of repairs have been completed to a bus shelter in Burnham-On-Sea. Sedgemoor District Council has recently refurbished the shelter in Victoria Street, pictured here. The works were undertaken by local builders Boley and Skuse.
New children's centre approved
PARENTS and young children in Burnham-On-Sea are set to benefit from a new Children’s Centre after the County Council announced on Tuesday (August 14th) that it had secured planning permission to build the exciting new Children’s Centre in the Winchester Road area of the town.

Man arrested over shop attack
A BURNHAM-On-Sea hairdresser is the latest business in the town left counting the cost of crime after a vandal damaged its shopfront at the weekend. One man was taken into custody after a window was smashed at Central Hair Studio in Abingdon Street early on Saturday.
Health centre plans unveiled
MULTI-million pound plans for a brand new medical centre at Berrow were unveiled for the first time at a special public meeting in Burnham-On-Sea on Monday evening (August 13th). Over 60 members of the public gathered in the town's Love Lane surgery to hear about the plans.
