Stray firework sets house ablaze
A BURNHAM-On-Sea family started the New Year with a shock, when a stray firework caused a blaze at their home just twelve minutes into 2008. Two fire engines from Burnham were sent to Wildes Close on Tuesday morning (January 1st) when the fire was spotted within the cavity wall of a house.

BURNHAM-On-Sea yachtsman Mark Preedy is spending the Christmas holiday on dry land in Australia after a medical drama during the latest leg of the ten-month Round The World Yacht Race. A crew member onboard one of the other yachts was taken ill.
Xmas light winners announced
THIS colourfully decorated house has been named the winner of Burnham-On-Sea's annual Christmas lights competition. A group of judges from Burnham and Highbridge town council have been touring both towns in recent days to find the best illuminated houses and shops.

HIGHBRIDGE'S Apex Wildife Park has been handed a huge Christmas windfall from the National Lottery this week. The Big Lottery Fund announced on Friday (December 21st) that children in the district are set to benefit from a £230,000 lottery windfall over three years.
Young Nathan's memory lives on
A NEW tennis academy has been launched in Burnham-On-Sea this week in memory of teenage tennis ace Nathan Edwards, who died in a tragic road accident last month. Nathan's parents, Sally Edwards and Joe Montgomery, were at the unveiling of The Nathan Edwards Tennis Academy at Burnham's Avenue Tennis Club.
Building starts at kids centre
WORK has begun this week on a new Children’s Centre in Burnham-On-Sea, which will provide local support and advice for parents and carers of children under five. The centre, due to open in Spring 2008, will create a single point of access to services for families.

A BUSY tourist attraction at the foot of Brean Down has this week unveiled proposals to expand its facilities. Brean Down Bird Garden, which is based at Brean Cove (pictured), has submitted a planning application to extend its property with new buildings and extra space for staff.

Lucky escape for crash driver
THE driver of this car had a lucky escape after the vehicle careered off a Burnham road and ended up at the bottom of a ditch on Wednesday (December 5th). Police, fire crews and paramedics were called to Stoddens Lane after the driver lost control of his vehicle.

THIS Highbridge roundabout has been labled 'Britain's ugliest' by local councillors this week as they launched fresh calls for urgent improvements to the 'hideous' structure. The lop-sided traffic island on the Bristol Road was opened outside Highbridge's Asda supermarket last month after being hastily finished.
Free parking to lure shoppers?
BURNHAM-On-Sea shoppers will able to park for free in the town at weekends during the run-up to Christmas as part of an initiative to help shops. Sedgemoor District Council's scheme will see charges waived at all car parks from December 1st to 23rd.
Woman attacked at Apex Park
BURNHAM-On-Sea police have issued an appeal for information after a 37-year-old woman was the victim of a robbery in the town last Thursday (November 22nd). The woman was walking along Southern Avenue and another footpath that runs by Apex Park lakes.

TRIBUTES have this week been paid to Nathan Edwards, the Burnham-On-Sea teenager who was killed in an horrific car accident near Bristol last Tuesday. Nathan, 17, was killed in a crash at Long Ashton, near Bristol, on November 20th. The former King Alfred School student was a talented tennis player.
Pensioner shaken by vandals
VANDALS attacked a house in the centre of Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday evening (November 24th), smashing the front window of the property. The elderly owner of the house in Oxford Street was left "shaken" by the incident which occurred around 4-5pm, according to neighbours.
Big crowds at lights switch-on
BIG crowds flocked into Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (November 24th) for the town's annual Christmas lights switch-on. BBC Points West reporter Clinton Rogers and Mayor Pauline Pollard flipped the switch at 4pm to light up the town for the festive period. An all-day Christmas market started the day.

PONTINS has confirmed that its Brean holiday park could soon be sold to a new owner. The holiday firm confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com that it is in talks with another holiday firm about a possible sale. Christmas craft show a hit
A CHRISTMAS craft and produce show held in Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (November 17th) attracted crowds of festive shoppers. The event, held for the first time this year, saw almost a dozen gift sellers gather in the Ritz Social Club in Victoria Street. It was well supported.

Tributes for former town Mayor
BURNHAM-On-Sea and Highbridge town councillors have this week paid tribute to former town Mayor Dennis Hewings, who has died. A minute's silence was held before Monday night's town council meeting in memory of Mr Hewings, pictured, who was Mayor from 1984 to 1985.
Six baptised in sea ceremony
SIX members of a Burnham-On-Sea church waded into the sea near the town's jetty on Sunday morning (September 30th) to be baptised in a special ceremony. Many Burnham Community Church members get baptised each year, but they usually choose a pool.
Vandals attack seafront seats
'Senseless' vandals have attacked a seafront shelter in Burnham-On-Sea, causing hundreds of pounds of damage. Several wooden benches have been broken and smashed opposite the Sailing Club at the southern end of The Esplanade. "Three of the brand new seats have been senselessly attacked," said a spokeswoman.
