Job losses hit Holiday Village
Exclusive: BURNHAM-On-Sea Holiday Village has this week announced a round of job losses as part of a management reorganisation. Haven Holidays confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com this week that it has laid off three staff as part of a restructuring at the holiday park.
'No changes' for seafront store
SUPERMARKET giant Somerfield has quashed rumours that it has sold or is considering selling its Burnham-On-Sea seafront store. The supermarket chain, which is based in Bristol, told Burnham-On-Sea.com that it has no plans to make changes to its Pier Street store.
Wassailing tradition lives on!
THE old Somerset tradition of wassailing - held each year on January 17th (the old 'twelfth night') to ensure a fine crop of cider apples during the summer ahead - will be performed at a charity event near Highbridge on Thursday night organised by Burnham Rotary Club.
Pool hopes dashed by council vote
HOPES of a last minute reprieve for Burnham-On-Sea swimming pool appear to have been dealt a blow with a decision by district councillors on Wednesday afternoon (January 16th) that the facility will shut on May 31st unless a new owner can be found. At a packed meeting inside Burnham's Princess Hall, members voted in favour of shutting the Berrow Road facility by May 31st.
Driver injured in A38 crash
DEBRIS littered the A38 at Highbridge after a woman suffered minor injuries following a collision between a car and and this British Telecom lorry on Wednesday morning (January 16th). Police were called to the entrance to Highbridge Caravans at 11.15am.

Child injured in town accident
A CHILD was rushed to hospital on Tuesday morning (January 15th) after an accident with a bus in Burnham-On-Sea. The youngster was crossing Burnham Road, near King Alfred School, when the incident involving a single-decker school bus occurred.

Police chase ends in crash
A DRAMATIC police chase through Burnham-On-Sea ended in a multi-vehicle accident which closed Love Lane on Monday afternoon (January 14th). A blue Volkswagen Golf which had been pursued by Devon and Cornwall police along the M5 motorway came to an abrupt halt outside the Dunstan House Inn.

FIRE crews from Burnham-On-Sea rushed to a cottage in West Huntspill on Friday lunchtime (January 11th) amid reports of a chimney fire. The crews were quickly on the scene in Withy Road (pictured) to extinguish the blaze at around 1pm. There were fears the fire could spread to the roof.
Fire crew helps trapped horse
BURNHAM-On-Sea fire fighters performed one of their most unusual rescues this week when a horse became trapped in a vehicle. The crew was called to Alstone Riding Centre at East Huntspill after the distressed animal became stuck on a wooden gate inside a horse box.
Delays on M5 after accident
ONE lane of the M5 motorway was closed at Burnham-On-Sea on Friday morning (January 11th) after a one-vehicle accident. A Vauxhall Vectra collided with the central reservation on the northbound carriageway between junctions 22 at Burnham and 23 for Bridgwater.

THIS bumper-sized cod has been caught by sea anglers fishing off Burnham-On-Sea this week. The huge 12lb 8oz Cod was reeled in by Terry Giles, a Weston Angling Club member, onboard the Burnham fishing boat 'Kelly's Hero' on Sunday (January 6th).
Churchgoers back pool campaign
HUNDREDS of churchgoers in Burnham-On-Sea have backed the fight to save the town's swimming pool from closure. Reverend Graham Witts of St Andrew's Church has this week handed the independent campaign group Save Our Swimming Pool a petition signed by 300 parishioners over the Christmas period.
Xmas lights winners awarded
Photo special: RESIDENTS in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge whose Christmas lights displays caught the eyes of judges of an annual competition have this week been presented with their awards. The winners of the Town Council's competition were handed trophies and certificates on Monday (January 7th).
Furniture thrown from house
POLICE were called to the centre of Highbridge during the early hours of Saturday (January 5th) after reports that a resident was throwing items of furniture out of a second floor window. A police spokesman said: "We were called to deal with a domestic incident at 12.10am."
£2,520 boost for local groups
BURNHAM-On-Sea town council has announced a New Year cash boost for thirteen local groups. Town councillors voted on Monday night (January 7th) to award £2,520 to organisations and charities in the Burnham and Highbridge area as part of its annual grants hand-out.
Seafront shelters damaged
SEAFRONT shelters in Burnham-On-Sea have again been attacked by vandals over the weekend. The chain fences around one of the shelters have been pulled down, bottles have been strewn over the floor, and further damage has been caused to the wooden struts.
Police name tragic pensioner
POLICE have named the pensioner who died in a road accident on the A38 at Rooksbridge, near Burnham-On-Sea, on Friday January 4th, and renewed their appeal for witnesses. A white BMW 5-series car was involved in a collision with a pedestrian at around 12.15pm.

Anglers reel in bumper Rays
BUMPER-sized Thornback Rays were reeled in by Burnham-On-Sea fishermen when they took part in the town's first sea angling competition of the year on Sunday (January 6th). Thirty four members of Burnham Boat Owners Association took to Bridgwater Bay.

VANDALS have been blamed for reducing the number of music fans at a fundraising rock concert in Highbridge on Saturday night (January 5th). Scores of promotional posters put up around the Morland Estate were torn down during the days leading up to the concert.

Man killed in crash horror
A MAN was killed and two people were injured in two horrific road accidents in the Burnham-On-Sea area on Friday afternoon (January 4th). These were the scenes outside the Fox and Goose public house on the A38 following a three-vehicle collision at 11.30am involving two cars and a tractor.
Market will 'continue until Easter'
SUNDAY morning markets will continue to be held in Highbridge until next Easter, even though the town's cattle markets have moved to Bridgwater's new multi-million pound regional agricultural centre. Mead Realisations says it hopes the popular Sunday markets will stay in Highbridge for another four months.
Drivers line up for Brean Rally

Rest home fears raised in 2006
A BURNHAM-On-Sea rest home which suddenly shut down last week had "serious failings in standards of care" according to inspectors. The Commission for Social Care Inspection says it first raised concerns about the quality of service at Beechwood House Rest Home in 2006.

Lorry smash causes M5 delays
THESE were the scenes on the M5 motorway at Burnham-On-Sea on Wednesday morning (January 2nd) as motorists faced long delays after a two-vehicle accident. One lane was closed northbound between junctions 23 at North Petherton and 22 at Burnham following the accident at 9.50am.

Man arrested after accident

Charity swimmers brave the sea!
A GROUP of brave swimmers gritted their teeth and raced into the sea at Brean for a New Year's Day swim in aid of local charities. The nine fun-loving swimmers, who were dressed in colourful swimwear, took a dip in the Bristol Channel to raise funds for three local causes - the Neo Natal Unit at Taunton's Musgrove Hospital, BARB and the RNLI.
Vandals attack Burnham florist shop
A BURNHAM town centre business faces a repair bill for hundreds of pounds after vandals attacked a shopfront in the early hours of New Year's Day. Two of the large panes of glass at Salisbury Florists in the High Street were smashed, leaving the shop's annoyed owners to start 2008 with a clean-up.
