One fire engine was initially called to Watchfield at 11.13am after a large column of smoke was spotted almost a mile away.

A MODEL maker has donated this replica of a lifeboat to Burnham-On-Sea's lifeboat station. Mick Knowles has been constructing miniature ships, boats and galleons for around 30 years, and has just completed a 1/12th scale model of a Waveney class lifeboat, which he has donated.

A VICAR from the Burnham-On-Sea area has completed a sponsored pilgrimage from West Huntspill to Wells to raise money for two charities. Rev Geoffrey Walsh walked from West Huntspill to Wells to raise £250 for the Children's Society and Kit for Kids, supported by parishioners from his two churches.

ONE of Burnham-On-Sea's rescue hovercrafts was called to Weston on Saturday afternoon (October 10th) after Coastguards reported a water skier in difficulty on the mudflats. The man, from South Wales, had skied across the Bristol Channel from Porthcawl to watch Weston's annual motorbike beach races.

FIRE crews from Burnham-On-Sea and other parts of Somerset have been tackling a major overnight fire at a poultry house near Bridgwater. A call was received at 2.55am on Saturday morning (October 10th) reporting the blaze in a poultry house at Fiddington. Six fire crews were mobilised to investigate.

TOWN councillors in Burnham-On-Sea have this week approved proposals to name a new road after a church hall that was demolished to make way for a new development of flats. The road running alongside the former St Peter's Hall will be named 'Saints Close'.

THE husband of Prince Charles's former florist killed himself because of money problems, an inquest heard on Thursday (October 8th), five months after his body was found in a Burnham-On-Sea river estuary. David Lowe, 52, was found drowned in the River Parrett at Burnham in May.

Exclusive: A pupil at a Highbridge school has become the latest youngster in the Burnham-On-Sea area to be affected by Swine Flu. A youngster in Year 1 at Beechfield Infants has been confirmed with the flu virus, the school told Burnham-On-Sea.com. There is also an outbreak of chicken pox.

Seafront race gets underway
OVER sixty runners took part in Burnham's first monthly 5km seafront run of the winter season on Thursday (October 1st). The event, which is run by Burnham Swim and Sports Academy, was won by the Academy's Martin Rogers in a fast time of 17 minutes, 36 seconds.

BURNHAM-On-Sea's MP was the special guest when Somerset Scouts held their AGM in the town this week. David Heathcoat-Amory joined the town's Mayor and Mayoress, Derick and Christine Cooper, at the meeting which was held in Burnham Scout Headquarters in Stoddens Road. Cyclist hurt in town accident
