Petition: 'Don't sell off our town'
Exclusive: CONCERNED residents in Highbridge have this week launched a petition calling for the long-term future of two public gardens in the town to be secured. It comes amid concern that Jubilee Gardens, next to Highbridge's town clock, and the Town Green could be sold off to developers.

Man attacked with baseball bat
Exclusive: A 24-year-old man has been arrested after a serious assault in the centre of Highbridge on Monday evening (October 26th) when a man was struck over the head with a baseball bat. The injured man, also in his 20s, was taken by ambulance to Weston General Hospital with head injuries.
Sven meets Burnham footballer

A NEW shop in Burnham-On-Sea opened its doors for the first time on Monday (October 26th). Called Hooky Street, the business in Chapel Street sells a wide range of catalogue items, including clothes and toys. Its owners hope it will do well during the recession due to the nature of its business.
Town carnival gets sign boost
WITH just a few weeks to go until this year's Burnham-On-Sea carnival parade, organisers have been given a boost. Fusion Leisure Centre, based at Burnham's Home Farm Holiday Park, has donated £1,000 towards the cost of a dozen new advertising signs for the popular November event.
Mayor launches poppy appeal
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Mayor and Mayoress have this week launched the town's annual poppy appeal. Derek and Christine Cooper launched the appeal with members of Burnham's Royal British Legion outsoide the town council chambers and urged local people to dig deep to help the fundraisers.
Fresh police appeal after robbery
POLICE have issued new descriptions of the three men who robbed a man in Burnham-on-Sea last week. As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com, the 28-year-old man was attacked last Monday night (October 19th) as he walked along Berrow Road near the junction to Stoddens Road.
Council's purge on 'sign clutter'
DOZENS of road signs across the Burnham-On-Sea area have been removed by Somerset County Council during the past four months as par of a bid to cull the number of redundant signs along our roads. Across the county, 550 have been removed in total to crackdown on roadside 'sign clutter'.
Couple's 60th year celebrated
OVER ninety people celebrated a special milestone for a well-known Burnham-On-Sea couple at the weekend. District and town councillor Neville Jones and his wife Margot celebrated their 60th anniversary with a special dinner at West Huntspill on Saturday evening (October 24th).
Burnham-On-Sea's town crier dies
TRIBUTES have been paid to Burnham-On-Sea's town crier of 24 years, who died on Friday (October 23rd) following a long struggle with poor health. Fred Smith, 72, had suffered serious health problems in recent years but continued to attend civic functions and shout the traditional cry of 'Oh Yeaz, Oh Yeaz' with gusto.
Kayakers spark beach alarm
BURNHAM Coastguards and a rescue hovercraft were called to Brean beach on Sunday (October 25th) following concern for two kayakers seen almost half a mile out on the mudflats. Beach warden Dave Furber raised the alarm at 1.55pm after spotting the pair, from Bristol, wading through mud to reach the sea.

THE balance of political power on Somerset County Council has shifted with the surprise defection of a Conservative councillor to the Liberal Democrats. Conservative County Councillor for Bridgwater South, Steven Gill, has crossed the floor from the Conservatives to join the Lib Dems.
Wind-damaged yacht rescued
Exclusive Video: A YACHT whose sails were ripped to shreds in storm-force winds in the Bristol Channel has been rescued by Burnham-On-Sea's lifeboat crews this morning (Sunday, October 25th) Two lifeboats were called by Coastguards to help the yacht Jekeeda II after its skipper reported problems west of Stert Island.
Park's £4m scheme steps closer
BREAN Leisure Park's £4million development project has moved a further step closer with the submission of a planning application over the next few weeks. The park plans to install a roof to cover a new 25m, six lane pool featuring an ice rink, water flumes and a mini indoor river.
Cash boost for bloom organisers

Fire crews sent to tractor blaze
TWO fire crews from Burnham-On-Sea tackled a tractor blaze on the outskirts of the town on Saturday afternoon (October 24th). They were called to Rookery Farm in Vole Road at 3.45pm. The fire was already out on arrival but had damaged a vehicle, said a spokesman.
MP offers hope to path protesters
Exclusive: BURNHAM-On-Sea's MP has today (Saturday, October 24th) offered fresh hope to protesters calling for a new pavement to be introduced along Berrow's Coast Road. David Heathcoat-Amory joined almost 50 marchers at the protest, who also included Somerset County Councillor Leader Ken Maddock.

New protest march in Berrow

Infants School welcomes BARB
HUNDREDS of pupils at Burnham-On-Sea's Infants School met crewmembers of the town's rescue hovercrafts on Friday (October 23rd) when the school held a fundraising event. The school's scarecrow day and harvest festival raised hundreds of pounds for BARB and Oxfam.
Strike halts town post services
POST collections and deliveries in Burnham-On-Sea have been halted today (Friday, October 23rd) as Royal Mail workers hold a one day strike. A picket line of over 40 staff was set up outside the sorting office in Dunstan Road. "Today's action is not about pay, it's about safeguarding mail services for our customers," said a worker.
New dispersal areas launched
POLICE in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge have this week been given the go-ahead to launch new disperal areas in car parks in the town. Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report earlier this month that Inspector Roger Tolley wanted to use Dispersal Orders to stamp out anti-social behaviour in local car parks.
Local groups given cash boost
BURNHAM-On-Sea's hovercraft crew and a local group of brownies have been given a financial boost this week with the donation of hundreds of pounds following a fundraising bike ride. Over fifty motorbikes took part in the 160-mile Pasty Run from Puriton to Swanage.
Brave trio saved life of teenager
TWO residents and a policeman from Watchfield, near Highbridge, have been presented with bravery awards this week after they saved a teenage girl trapped in a pond. Martin Chandler, Kim Tripp and PC Alan Alsford were presented with the Royal Humane Society Award on Wednesday.

SEDGEMOOR District Council revealed on Tuesday (October 20th) that it has held preliminary talks on controversial plans to build a new wind farm near Burnham-On-Sea. The council's planning department said it had met with Ecotricity to discuss plans to construct five new wind turbines at East Huntspill.
Manchester United mascot visits

Bird project receives cash boost
A PROJECT based near Burnham-On-Sea which is encouraging species of wading birds to the Somerset Levels has received support from Wessex Water this week. Wildlife charity Secret World is aiming to attract a greater variety of birds to its centre at East Huntspill and has received £500 funding.
Markets to return to town
A regular market is set to return to Highbridge town centre from November, it was announced on Monday (October 19th). Following the closure of the weekly Sunday markets which used to operate from the cattle market site, Sedgemoor District Council has been in discussions with a company called Market Forces.
Drink driver, 22, held after crash
Exclusive: A MOTORIST has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after an accident in Highbridge town centre on Saturday evening (October 17th). Officers were called to Market Street, pictured, after a car and a bike collided near the town's community centre - and police were called to the scene.
Half term film-making fun
A WEEK of Half Term film-making activities are to be held in Highbridge. The free event, organised by Family Connections, will be held in Highbridge Community Hall between October 26th and 30th. SEDGEMOOR District Council has joined three other local authorities in issuing a legal challenge over the government's decision to withdraw millions of pounds of funding for council house improvements. Sedgemoor was expecting to receive £40million to bring council homes up to a minimum standard.
£112k boost for Berrow school
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Mayor performed the official opening of a brand new pre-school at Berrow on Saturday (October 17th). Cllr Derick Cooper and Parish Council Chairwoman Jenny Bentley cut a ribbon, as pictured here, to open the new facility at Berrow School. It comes after a £112,000 grant boost from Somerset County Council.
Lifeboat called to boat in distress
BURNHAM-On-Sea's lifeboat crew was called out to rescue a boat in difficulty this evening (Saturday October 17th). Two people became stranded on a small boat in the River Parrett at Highbridge after its engine failed. The passengers onboard, who were not injured, called Coastguards at 6.15pm.
Auction to be held this Saturday
DOZENS of items will go under the hammer at a special auction being held in aid of Burnham-On-Sea's Community Centre this Saturday (October 17th). The 50/50 auction will be held at the centre in Berrow Road to raise money for the 'Save our Burnham Community Centre' appeal.
Mayor's concert raises funds
MORE than 120 people crowded into Burnham-On-Sea's Princess Hall on Friday (October 16th) for a fundraising concert hosted by the town's Mayor and Mayoress. The annual Mayor's Charity Concert was organised by Derick Cooper and Mayoress Christine Cooper and reaised over £1,000.
