Subway creates 10 jobs in town
Exclusive: A FORMER butcher's shop on Burnham-On-Sea High Street will be transformed into a new Subway cafe in the New Year, ending a year of speculation about where the chain will be based. Mike Bond, the entreprenuer who owns the licence to open a Subway in the town confirmed on Friday (November 6th) that the new business will open its doors in January.
Busy year for Burnham artists
A BURNHAM-On-Sea group that organises arts events across the town held its annual general meeting this week when its members looked back at a successful year. The Highbridge and Burnham Artists group oversees the annual River Brue visual arts festival and other community events throughout the year.
Carnival excitement growing
EXCITEMENT is building ahead of Monday's 62nd annual Burnham-On-Sea Carnival, which will feature more than 90 colourful entries. This year's Carnival Queen Jessica Rogers and her princesses, Burnham girls Danielle Hockey and Bethany May Ellis, will lead the parade through town.
Town crier's funeral announced
THE date for the funeral of Burnham-On-Sea's late town crier has been announced. As we reported last week, Fred Smith, 72, died on October 23rd following a long struggle with poor health. His funeral will be held on Wednesday afternoon, 11th November, at 1pm in Bridgwater.
B-Factor stars ready for finals
FIFTEEN budding singers, musicians and comedians of the future showed off their talent during Burnham-On-Sea's very own X-Factor style talent competition this week, with the finals due to take place on Saturday (November 7th). The event is 'B-Factor', organised by BEES with funding from the town council.

A LIVELY debate on the possible expansion of Hinkley Point nuclear power station took place in Burnham-On-Sea on Thursday night (November 5th). The special consultation meeting was held in the Princess Hall and was organised by South West Planning Aid, a charity.
Police in hunt for missing girl
POLICE are appealing for information to help locate this 15-year-old girl who was last seen at Brean Leisure Park, near Burnham, last weekend. Fifteen year-old Samantha Parnell, who is from Cannington, was last seen at the leisure park on Saturday October 31st at around 9.45pm.
Play area short-listed for £50k

Cyclist recovering after crash
Exclusive: A BURNHAM-On-Sea cyclist who was injured in the town earlier this week when she was struck by a passing car suffered more serious injuries than originally thought and is recovering in hospital. Ferry boss raises Burnham hopes
Exclusive: THE entrepreneur who is launching a Bristol Channel ferry service next year was in Burnham-On-Sea this week to reassure councillors that he is still considering adding the town to his list of routes. Chris Marrow, pictured above, visited the Town Council where he spoke about his hopes to bring his fleet of ferries into Bridgwater Bay to pick up Burnham passengers.
Leaflets boost winter safety
DOZENS of youngsters in Highbridge had a busy half-term holiday, making winter safety leaflets as part of the town's Dreamscheme initiative. The 40 youngsters created over 350 'Be Safe This Winter' leaflets featuring advice on housing, vehicle, road and personal safety over the winter period.
Seawall graffiti being removed
Exclusive: GRAFFITI daubed on Burnham's sea wall during the past few days is being removed by the district council this week. Vandals have spray-painted a number of images and messages over the wall on the South Esplanade during recent days, as pictured here. They are now having to removed.
School's New York visit in photos
A GROUP of students from Burnham-On-Sea enjoyed a dream trip to New York over the half-term school holiday. The sixth formers from King Alfred School visited many of the city's key landmarks including the Statue of Liberty, UN Building, NBC TV Studios and the Empire State Building.

Highbridge artist's work on show
THE work of talented Highbridge artist Tim Smith is on display this week at an exhibition in Burnham-On-Sea. Tim's work consists mainly of watercolours of townscapes including Bridgwater, as well as Burnham and Highbridge. The exhibition is at Sea Breeze gallery in Victoria Street.
Cyclist injured in town accident
A WOMAN cyclist suffered suspected collar bone injuries after being knocked off her bike at a busy Burnham-On-Sea roundabout this evening (Sunday, November 1st). Police and ambulance crews rushed to the Esso petrol station roundabout next to the junction of Love Lane and Oxford Street at 7.15pm.
Mystery of 'plane in flames' solved?
Exclusive: THE mystery surrounding the sighting of a 'plane in flames' over Brean appears to be over after a Burnham-On-Sea.com reader sent us this photograph of the burning object and is confident it was a Chinese lantern. Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last week how Sharon Witcombe of Warren Road had spotted what she thought was an "aircraft engulfed in a fireball".

ONE of Burnham-On-Sea's hovercrafts was used for a 'safety mission' with a difference on Saturday (October 31st). Sedgemoor District Council's Assistant Harbour Officer, Ricky Holmes, and Nick Prout were flown out to check the safety of several buoys around Stert Island, as pictured here.

OVER 150 people dressed in gory and spooky costumes attended a Halloween charity ball in Highbridge on Saturday night (October 31st). The event at King Alfred School is expected to have raised thousands of pounds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, delighting organisers. The school's main hall was specially-decorated for the event.
Second strike halts post deliveries
THIS was the scene at the entrance to Burnham-On-Sea's sorting office this morning (Saturday, October 31st) as Royal Mail staff in the town held a second strike, halting deliveries and collections across our area. The second strike involves over 40 staff, who set up a picket outside the delivery office in Dunstan Road.

Spooky speedsters in Burnham
FUN-loving motorcyclists dressed in Halloween costumes roared through Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday morning (October 31st) at the start of a sponsored 35 mile bike ride. Members of the Somerset Motorcycle Group organised the ride from Burnham to Watchet for BARB.

Barrage project 'could be scrapped'
THE government has denied a national newspaper report claiming that the project to build a Severn Barrage across the Bristal Channel could be scrapped. The Times reported on Friday (October 30th) that the project will be shelved as part of a cost-cutting drive by the government.
Man Utd mascot drops into town
'FRED the Red’, the official club mascot of Manchester United, visited Burnham-On-Sea on Friday (October 30th) during a tour of Somerset. The mascot appeared at Britannia Building Society's branch in College Street, where he was met by a group of fans. The mascot is on a half-term holiday tour of the county.
Shop takes part in volunteer day
A BURNHAM-On-Sea charity shop hopes to raise hundreds of pounds by taking part in a nationwide volunteering day on Saturday (October 31st). The Sue Ryder Shop on Burnham's High Street is taking part in 'Make a Difference Day' when local people are able invited to pledge treasured items or volunteer for an hour to help in the shop.
Ferry service hopes suffer blow
Exclusive: A brand new ferry service will launch in the Bristol Channel early next year, but hopes that Burnham-On-Sea would be included on the route have been dashed. Operator Severn Link announced on Thursday (October 29th) plans to create a regular passenger ferry service between Ilfracombe and Swansea.
£140k play area hit by new delays
THIS week's planned opening of a new £140,000 play area at Highbridge's Apex Park has been postponed due to delays in getting hold of some of the equipment, the district council said this week. Duncan McGinty, leader of Sedgemoor District Council, said: "Apex Park's new play area was meant to be open this week."
Appeal for more carnival helpers
ORGANISERS of this year's Burnham-On-Sea Carnival have this week appealed for more volunteers to come foward to help with collections of money along the route on the night. Thousands of pounds needs to be raised to keep the carnival running and also help local good causes.
New power line to be debated
A PUBLIC meeting is to be held in Mark, near Burnham-On-Sea, next month when residents will be about to learn more about plans to build a high voltage power line connecting Hinkley Point to a new sub-station in Avonmouth. The line could pass through the East Huntspill and Watchfield area.
Mystery over 'plane in flames'
MYSTERY surrounds an apparent sighting of an aeroplane in flames over Brean on Wednesday evening (October 28th). Sharon Witcombe of Warren Road claims to have seen the craft engulfed in a fireball and flying lower than usual as she walked home at around 5.15pm last night.
Motorist hurt in car accident
A MOTORIST suffered leg and head injuries after crashing into a telegraph pole near Burnham-On-Sea this morning (Thursday, Ocober 29th). Police and ambulance crews from Burnham-On-Sea were called to the A38 outside Biddisham at around 7.40am. At 8.42am a temporary closure of the A38 was enforced.
Hedgehogs go in the spotlight
HEDGEHOG enthusiasts are being invited to a garden centre near Burnham-On-Sea this weekend for a two day event dedicated to the prickly creatures. Maria Fountain, who works at Secret World, will host the Hedgehog Roadshow at Sanders Garden World on both Saturday and Sunday.

Exclusive: A STORMY meeting of Brean and Berrow Residents' Association came to a dramatic halt this week when six villagers walked out after the Chairman of more than 20 years was voted from her position. Almost 50 residents crowded into the Village Hall for the annual meeting.

Warning issued after play area fire
Exclusive: BURNHAM-On-Sea fire crews have issued a warning to children about the dangers of playing with fire after they tackled a blaze at a play area in the town on Wednesday afternoon (October 28th). One fire engine was sent to the Winchester Road play area at 3pm, as pictured.
