Fire crews tackle big blaze
BURNHAM-On-Sea fire crews were among dozens of firefighters tackling a major blaze in Bridgwater on Saturday night (November 28th). Fire engines from Bridgwater, Taunton, Nether Stowey, Burnham, Street and Yeovil were called to Penel Orlieu in Bridgwater at 9.31pm, as pictured here.

BURNHAM-On-Sea's Carnival Queen and her Princesses joined the Mayor in switching on the town's Christmas lights today (Saturday, November 28th). A special ceremony was held in front of hundreds of spectators outside the Victoria Hotel in Victoria Street, where music and entertainment was laid on for the crowds.

A LONG-running group that represents Burnham-On-Sea's anglers, marine rescue services and boat users has a new Chairman and Secretary following a meeting on Friday (November 27th). Ricky Holmes stepped down as Chairman of the Burnham Water Users' Forum.
Crash delays traffic on M5
THIS was the scene on the M5 motorway on Friday evening (November 27th) after a car crashed into a central reservation during heavy rain. Fire and ambulance crews from Burnham-On-Sea were called to the southbound carriageway shortly before 6pm after a car accident in slippery driving conditions.
£50k lotto cheque handed over!
DELIGHTED fundraisers in Berrow were handed this bumper cheque for £50,000 on Friday afternoon (November 27th) after they won a phone competition for National Lottery funding towards a new play area in the village. The village was named the 'lucky loser' of a phone poll.

THIRTEEN artists from across Burnham-On-Sea will open up their galleries to the public later this month when they hold a three day Christmas arts trail. The event, organised by Burnham's Lighthouse Arts Group, will be held between Friday November 27th and iunday November 29th.
Tesco urged to resolve path issues
Exclusive: Residents in Burnham-On-Sea have this week called on supermarket giant Tesco to step in and resolve lighting problems along a footpath it manages near its store. The footpath running between Rosewood Avenue and the rear of the store in Ben Travers Way, which is owned and maintained by the store, has been unlit since the start of November.
'We've won £50k lotto jackpot!'
Exclusive: OVERJOYED fundraisers in Berrow were celebrating on Thursday (November 26th) after learning they had won £50,000 of National Lottery funding by being named the 'lucky loser' in a TV phone competition. The news was broken to the stunned team on Thursday by bosses from the People's Millions competition.
Rescue teams bid to help swan
A RESCUE boat crew from Burnham-On-Sea was called to help wildlife carers retrieve an injured swan on Cheddar Reservoir on Wednesday (November 25th). East Huntspill based Secret World called on the help of BARB's inshore rescue boat to recover the bird, which sadly could not be retrieved.
Xmas lights countdown begins!

POLICE have today appealed for the public's help after a spate of car vandalism in this quiet Burnham-On-Sea street. Three cars were damaged overnight on Saturday November 21st and Sunday November 22nd by being sprayed with a corrosive liquid in Creswick Way. More..
Flooded residents call for action
Exclusive: CONCERNED residents have called for action after this street in Burnham-On-Sea was left under five inches of water on Wednesday (November 25th) when a blocked ditch on a nearby holiday park caused drains to be overwhelmed. One half of record couple dies
ONE half of Britain's longest married couple has died peacefully in Burnham-On-Sea. Great-great-grandfather Walter Postings, known as Wally, was 101 when he passed away on November 19th. In September the couple were named the UK's longest married couple by record keepers. More..

Seafront lights could be sold off
Exclusive: SHOCK plans to remove and sell Burnham-On-Sea's decorative seafront lights as part of a money-saving initiative were debated by town councillors on Tuesday evening (November 24th). Ten of the 40 lights along The Esplanade are currently not working, and the cash-strapped town council has baulked at the high cost of repairing them.

Parents mark tragic anniversary
A BURNHAM-On-Sea couple who lost their son in a car accident exactly two years ago have this week returned to the spot where he died. Joe Montgomery, Nathan's dad, and mum Sally Edwards returned to the Long Ashton road junction near Bristol where their son Nathan, 17, was killed in November 2007.
Coastguards called to help surfer
A BEACH walker's concerns for the welfare of a windsurfer spotted struggling in heavy seas off Burnham-On-Sea prompted a call-out for the town's Coastguards on Sunday (November 22nd). Burnham Coastguards and lifeboat crews were alerted shortly after 2pm when a concerned member of the public reported seeing the windsurfer in difficulty near Burnham's lighthouse.
School powered by sunlight
A HIGHBRIDGE school is now partially powered by sunlight, following the introduction of 20 new solar panels at the school. King Alfred School held a special ceremony, attended by the town's Mayor and Mayoress, to mark the launch of its solar power scheme, which will cut its CO2 usage.
Petrol station shut by high winds
STRONG winds caused damaged to several businesses in Burnham-On-Sea on Monday afternoon (November 23rd). And Burnham's Esso petrol station in Love Lane was forced to temporarily close for several hours after the winds tore away part of its canopy, as pictured here on the right.
£50k phone competition underway
RESIDENTS in Berrow are today (Monday, November 23rd) appealing to Burnham-On-Sea.com readers to call a competition hotline to help them secure £50,000 of funding for a new play area in the village. As we first reported earlier this month, the parish council's application for funding to refurbish the play area on the Village Green has been short-listed to receive lottery funding.
Two arrests after eight bike thefts
Exclusive: Two people were arrested by Burnham-On-Sea police this afternoon (Sunday, November 22nd) as officers investigated the theft of EIGHT local motorbikes in recent weeks. Officers were called to Talbot Close in Highbridge at 2.45pm, as pictured, after the latest stolen bike was spotted by police.
Big crowd at Rocky Horror ball
BURNHAM-On-Sea County Councillor Peter Burridge-Clayton and his wife Jo were among hundreds of people pulling on Rocky Horror themed costumes on Saturday night (November 21st) for a local charity's fundraising ball. The couple helped raise money for animal charity Secret World.

Country music club's boost for BARB
BURNHAM-On-Sea's rescue hovercraft charity was one of four good causes to receive a funding boost from a Brean country and western club this week. The Tavern Country Music Club, based at Brean Leisure Park, handed over £750 to BARB, as pictured, towards the charity's ongoing hovercraft maintenance costs.
Tickets on sale for Xmas revue
FINAL rehearsals are underway at a drama group near Burnham-On-Sea as it plans to hold its annual Christmas revue. Brent Amateur Dramatics (BAD) is holding 'A BAD Broadcasting Company TV Presentation' featuring entertainment, music, dance and sketches poking fun at well-known television shows.
BBC expert visits Highbridge
Exclusive: BBC Gardeners' World expert Pippa Greenwood was in Highbridge on Saturday (November 21st) to give a talk about the impact of climate change on gardening. More than 150 enthusiasts from across the South West gathered in King Alfred School for the lecture about gardening and plant diseases.
Burnham off-licence 'safe for now'
Exclusive: BURNHAM-On-Sea's Threshers off-licence is not on the list of stores closing due to the firm being put into administration. Staff at the Threshers store in College Street were relieved to be told on Friday (November 20th) that the shop is not among a further 381 stores across the UK earmarked for a new round of closures.

FUNDRAISERS across Burnham-On-Sea have been raising thousands of pounds for BBC Children In Need today (Friday, November 20th). Pupils at King Alfred School held a 'no uniform day' and raised £1,142 while staff at Boots The Chemists, ASDA and Greggs The Bakery in Burnham and Highbridge also collected hundreds of pounds.
New ward opens at town hospital
Exclusive: THE next stage of Burnham-On-Sea Hospital's ongoing refurbishment has been completed this week with the opening of a new nine bed women's ward. This, and the new Out-Patients and Minor Injuries area, completes the first of four phases in the £740,000 major refurbishment.
O2 wins phone mast appeal
Exclusive: Mobile phone giant O2 has this week won its long-running bid to construct a five metre tall phone mast on top of Burnham-On-Sea's Ritz Cinema. The Planning Inspectorate told Burnham-On-Sea.com it had overturned a decision by Sedgemoor District Council to refuse planning permission and give it the thumbs up.
Public praised over arrests
BURNHAM-On-Sea police have this week praised the public for helping to contribute information that led to four arrests of suspected thieves. Police were called to Rosewood Avenue after residents reported three youths acting suspiciously. Officers from the response team at Burnham police station attended and after a search they arrested a 16-year-old youth for burglary.
Handbag snatched in High Street
POLICE are appealing for information following the theft of a handbag from an elderly couple in Burnham-On-Sea High Street. Between 1pm and 1.30pm last Friday (November 13th) a handbag, containing a large sum of cash and debit cards, was stolen from the back of a mobility vehicle travelling through the town.
Big Issue seller has brain tumour
POPULAR Burnham-On-Sea Big Issue seller Colin Johnstone has been diagnosed with a brain tumour. Colin, who is often standing outside Shakers night club in the High Street selling the magazines, was given the shock news last week by Burnham-On-Sea's War Memorial Hospital.

A RETIRED couple thought they were going quackers when they discovered this marrow in the shape of a duck in their vegetable patch this autumn! Marilyn and Lionel Partridge were so surprised by the way the vegetable had grown that they took it to Garden World.

Exclusive: RESIDENTS in Burnham-On-Sea have this week been urged to secure their sheds and outbuildings after a spate of break-ins. Six incidents have occurred over the last fortnight, according to Burnham-On-Sea police chief Roger Tolley, who advised local people to step up their security.
