Cheques boost Burnham groups
TWO of Burnham-On-Sea's marine rescue services have received financial boosts from members of Burnham Area Evening Flower Club this month. The club has presented both BARB and the RNLI with cheques for £400 each following a number of events throghout the past year.
Snow sweeps into Burnham
THE streets of Burnham-On-Sea turned white this evening (Sunday, December 20th) when wintry weather swept through the town. Pavements and roads were blanketed in a layer of hail at 5.30pm, as pictured here. Police have warned motorists to take extra care if they are driving.

Photo Special: MORE than 120 fun runners took part in Burnham-On-Sea's annual 'Christmas Jingle Run' on Sunday morning (December 20th). Slippery pavements caused by the wintry weather led organisers to switch the route of the course at the last minute from The Esplanade to the beach.
New off-licence to open in town
Exclusive: THE shutters came down for the final time at Burnham-On-Sea's Threshers off-licence on Saturday (December 19th) as the store's manager revealed he is planning to open a new off-licence in the town soon. Threshers in College Street has been forced to close down due to the nationwide collapse of First Quench.
£1,000 boost for Highbridge hall
A HIGHBRIDGE community hall has been handed a £1,000 Christmas boost this week. Burnham and Highbridge County Councillor John Woodman presented the money from his council community fund to Sedgemoor Community Partnership, the charity which runs the Morland Hall.
Driver 'shaken' in Burnham crash
THE driver of this car was left "shaken" after demolishing a street lighting column in an accident in Burnham-On-Sea early this morning (Saturday, December 19th). Police were called to the A38 roundabout close to the Isleport Industrial Estate after the BMW driver lost control of his vehicle.
Drink drive poster contest held
YOUNGSTERS from across the Burnham-On-Sea area have been taking part in a poster-making competition to highlight the risks of drinking and driving over the Christmas period. School pupils have produced scores of posters to encourage drivers to think twice before puttinng themselves at risk.
Fire crews help duo stuck in lift
BURNHAM-On-Sea fire crews have rescued two elderly people who became trapped in a lift at a care home in the town. Two fire crews were called to the Kathleen Chambers Care Home in Berrow Road, as pictured here, after concerned staff reported the pair stuck between floors.
Late night opening approved
Exclusive: Plans by a fast food outlet in the centre of Highbridge to open until the early hours of the morning at weekends have this week been approved by the district council after the owners backed down on proposals to open until 1.30am. Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported in October that Yummies Pizza in Market Street had applied to open until 1.30am at weekends.
Mayor's Christmas message
BURNHAM-On-Sea and Highbridge's Mayor, Derick Cooper, has issued the following Christmas message to residents of the two towns. "Time flies fast, Christmas is almost here and it is already more than half way through my Mayoral term. Being Mayor of Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge is a great honour."
Kindergarten's carols for OAPs

Three drink driving arrests in town
Exclusive: THREE people have been arrested in Burnham-On-Sea on suspicion of drink driving during the first fortnight of the police's annual Christmas drink drive campaign. It comes as more than 100 people have been arrested in total across the whole force area during 'Operation Tonic'.
Join Boxing Day dip at Brean!
BRAVE fundraisers are being sought to take part in a bracing dip in the sea at Brean on Boxing Day in aid of a Burnham-On-Sea charity. Over a dozen supporters of rescue hovercraft charity BARB have already signed up to take part in the sponsored splash, being held as a fundraising event.
1,300 name petition handed in
A PETITION containing 1,300 names calling for two public gardens in Highbridge to be safeguarded from development was handed in to the Chairman of Council, Councillor Jane Moreton, on Wednesday (16th December). Campaigners launched it on Burnham-On-Sea.com in October.
Reading Week marked at school
STUDENTS at a Highbridge school have been taking part in a special Reading Week aimed at boosting their interest in books. The Year 7 pupils at King Alfred School were given an opportunity to read a book of their choice over the course of the week during the special themed week.
Trapped couple freed from car
AN elderly couple was left "shaken" after being trapped in this car in a water-filled ditch at Brean on Wednesday afternoon (December 16th). Five fire crews, police and an ambulance crew were sent to the Weston Road at mid-day after the Toyota Yaris slid into the roadside ditch, as pictured here.
Pool axed but Civic Pride saved
BURNHAM-On-Sea’s beach boating pool is to be dismantled and removed next year, but proposals to axe the town’s Civic Pride regeneration project were given a dramatic reprieve at a meeting this morning (Wednesday, December 16th). Members of Sedgemoor District Council’s Executive met in Bridgwater to discuss a list of controversial cost-cutting proposals.
£50k pool revamp hits setback
Exclusive: The £50,000 project to replace every tile in Burnham-On-Sea's swimming pool got underway this week and immediately hit a setback when it emerged that the scale of the problems is worse than first thought. The owners of Burnham Swim and Sports Academy have received the "disappointing" news this week.
Police offer property crime tips
BURNHAM-On-Sea police are holding several events in the town this week to help residents prevent property crime. The events will be held as part of the forcewide police initiative called 'Operation Relentless'. Throughout the week there will be crime reduction displays.
Marine Cove scheme in jeopardy
Exclusive: THE £360,000 project to revamp Burnham-On-Sea's Marine Cove gardens on the town's seafront is also under threat by the district council's funding problems. Sedgemoor District Council had pledged £35,000 to the scheme to modernise the public gardens, but that could now be re-considered.
Long-service award for Kathy
A LONG-serving staff member at Burnham-On-Sea's War Memorial Hospital has this week been praised for her "simply wonderful" service and dedication to patient care over the past 25 years. Kathy Mould, a Healthcare Assistant at the hospital in Love Lane, has been presented with a special 25-year long service award by the Chairman of NHS Somerset, Mrs Jane Barrie OBE.
Mayor congratulates footie team
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Mayor and Mayoress have this week congratulated a Burnham school's football team who have become county schools' champions. St Andrew's Junior School Under 11 team won the Somerset large primary school's tournament final after a close encounter.
Snow this week for Burnham?
BURNHAM-On-Sea could get its first sprinkling of snow later this week if weather forecasts prove accurate. The Met Office forecasters predict temperatures will plunge over the next few days, with wintry weather expected to follow across the south west region, including Burnham, by the weekend.
Young cyclist off to UK awards
A YOUNG Burnham-On-Sea cyclist has been invited to attend the British Cycling Awards and 50th annual gala dinner. Roy Jones, who is a King Alfred School student in Highbridge, will travel to Manchester on February 20th 2010 for the special awards evening following a win earlier this year.
Battle is on to save £338k plans
A GROUP of concerned Burnham-On-Sea residents will this week make a last-ditch attempt to secure £338,000 of funding towards the town centre's regeneration. Sedgemoor District Council will be deciding at a crunch meeting on Wednesday (December 16th) whether to approve plans to modernise the town centre as part of a 'Civic Pride' project costing a total of £750,000.
Road safety advice for pupils
PUPILS at a Highbridge School have thanked police for giving them safety tips during UK Road Safety Week by sending them over 25 thank you cards! PCSOs Gill Bawler and Claire Chambers held a series of safety lessons at St John's School, giving road safety tips and other advice.
Police offer free bike marking
CYCLISTS can have their bikes security marked and pick up safety tips when Highbridge police hold a special bike marking event later this week. A police surgery will be held on Wednesday afternoon (December 16th) from 2.30pm - 4pm at the Police Pod at the Asda store in Highbridge.
Pylon plans hitting house prices
Exclusive: CONTROVERSIAL proposals to build a 400,000 volt electricity line through the Burnham-On-Sea area are already hitting property prices along the planned route, it was claimed during a packed protest meeting on Sunday evening (December 13th). "Why would people want to buy a house here if they could be moving underneath a long line of 150ft pylons," asked one villager.
Rapping group launches new CD
A GROUP of rapping pensioners from Burnham-On-Sea officially launched their first album at the weekend with the hope of clinching number one in the seasonal pop charts! The Wrinkly Rappers performed at Asda in Highbridge on Saturday morning (December 12th).
Christmas drama attracts crowds
LARGE crowds flocked to Burnham-On-Sea's Princess Hall over the weekend to watch a drama group's performance of Alice In Wonderland Junior. Hundreds of people watched the annual performance held by Burnham Excellent Entertainment Society (BEES) on Saturday and Sunday.
Santa visits Burnham-On-Sea!
SANTA Claus made a special visit to Burnham-On-Sea over the weekend when the charity that runs the town's rescue hovercrafts held a fundraising grotto. Part of Burnham's rescue hovercraft station has been transformed into a temporary home for Father Christmas over two weekends.

BURNHAM-On-Sea's MP has rigorously denied that he claimed expenses for several packs of slug pellets. Following the latest release of expense claims published here on the Parliament website, it was reported that David Heathcoat-Amory had made several claims for gardening items, including slug pellets.
£2.4m clear-up project approved
SEDGEMOOR District Council has this week approved spending £2.4m to clear up a former waste landfill site in Burnham-On-Sea and turn into a public space and new homes. Once specialist cleaning work at Rosewood Green, off Worston Lane, is completed this will allow the currently disused site to be used for providing 'community green space' and up to 117 new homes.
RAF air cadets receive award
SEVERAL air cadets from 290 Squadron Air Training Corps in Burnham-On-Sea and Weston received awards when their annual presentation dinner was held this week in Lympsham this week. The dinner was held in the Batch Country Hotel this week and attended by Group Captain Chris Brazier RAF.

FUN-loving students from Highbridge's King Alfred School hit the streets of Burnham-On-Sea, Highbridge and Bridgwater on Friday (December 11th) when their Rag Week fundraising came to an end with a traditional walk through the local towns. Thousands of pounds is expected to have been raised for three good causes.

THREE fire crews rushed to a Burnham-On-Sea pub on Friday (December 11th) after an electrical fault caused a drama. Three fire engines from Burnham-On-Sea and Bridgwater rushed to The Rosewood on Love Lane following the report of an electrical fire in the pub's kitchen.
MP in new expenses revelations
BURNHAM-On-Sea's MP claimed £2.69 for a pack of slug pellets, according to the latest set of parliamentary expenses released on Thursday (December 10th). According to the expense claims published on the Parliament website, David Heathcoat-Amory submitted an invoice, dated 30 April 2008, for several gardening items.
Missing girl at garden centre
Exclusive: POLICE were called to a Brent Knoll garden centre on Thursday (December 10th) after a young girl was reported missing. Woried staff at Sanders Garden World called in officers to investigate and the store was temporarily shut to prevent people leaving or entering.
Tributes paid to speedway star
TRIBUTES have been paid to Somerset Rebels speedway star Emil Kramer, who died in a road accident in Sweden on Wednesday night (December 9th). The 30-year-old first joined the Highbridge-based Rebels in 2006, quickly becoming a firm favourite, and was due to lead the team in 2010.
Beach pool set to be axed
Exclusive: The future of Burnham-On-Sea's crumbling beach boating pool will be decided next week with the district council recommending that it is removed, much to the sadness of town councillors. Burnham-On-Sea.com reported in August that the concrete base of the landmark was falling apart.

BURNHAM-On-Sea's hopes of becoming twinned with Walt Disney World in Florida have been dashed this week. Four nominations were put forward for Burnham-On-Sea to gain the title of 'Walt Disney World's UK Twinned Town' in a unique competition that closed in November.
Bus timetable changes attacked
Exclusive: Travelling by bus between Burnham-On-Sea and other towns in the district is set to become more difficult due to changes to timetable booklets in the new year. That's the view of Burnham town councillor Chris Williams, who this week attacked the County Council for unveiling "short-sighted" changes to timetables.

MP raises pylons in parliament
BURNHAM-On-Sea's MP raised controversial plans to build a new 400,000 volt power line connecting Hinkley Point to Avonmouth in the House of Commons on Monday (December 7th). As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com in September, the National Grid wants to connect the proposed new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point to a new sub-station near Bristol.
Fraud probe at town cashpoint
Exclusive: SCORES of shoppers at a supermarket in Highbridge may have fallen victim to a scam operating at a cashpoint outside the store. Bosses at Asda in Caxton Road called in police last week after noticing a strange device attached to one cashpoint, as pictured here.
