Virus keeps hospital ward shut
BURNHAM-On-Sea War Memorial Hospital's wards remained closed to new patient admissions on Thursday (March 4th) following the outbreak of a virus last week. There are still a small number of patients showing symptoms of the Norovirus and the hospital's Matron and Infection Control staff are monitoring them.
O2 in £214k compensation claim
MOBILE phone giant O2 is demanding almost £214,500 from cash-strapped Sedgemoor District Council following an enforcement notice it issued in Burnham-On-Sea, it has emerged this week. The company wants an "award of costs" made against the council over the Pier Street mast decision.
Man jailed after drugs raid
Exclusive: A Highbridge man has been jailed for 18 months and had thousands of pounds seized following a successful police drugs raid in the town. Darren Sedgebeer was found guilty at Bristol Crown Court of possession with the intent to supply class C drugs and possession of class B drugs.
Garden centre holds orchid show
COLOURFUL blooms will go on show when a garden centre near Burnham-On-Sea holds its annual Orchid Weekend this weekend (March 6th and 7th). The event will be held at Sanders Garden World in Brent Knoll from Saturday. Visitors will be able to get free advice during the event dedicated to the exotic plants.
Highbridge Arts Festival opens
HIGHBRIDGE'S 63rd annual Festival of the Arts got underway in Burnham-On-Sea on Wednesday (March 3rd). Town Mayor Derick Cooper officially opened the popular festival, which shines the spotlight on talented youngsters from the ages of three up at The Princess.
Railway ticket machine attacked
Exclusive: THIEVES have smashed their way into a ticket machine at Highbridge Railway Station in an attempt to steal money from inside. The electronic pay machine on the northbound platform next to the station's car park, was discovered by commuters on Wednesday morning (March 3rd).
Royal backing for town charity
PRINCE Edward has this week been unveiled as the patron of Burnham rescue charity BARB's fundraising campaign to raise £60,000 for a new hovercraft. The Earl Of Wessex has given his backing to the campaign following a visit to Burnham-On-Sea's hovercraft and coastguard teams last April.
New pasty shop opens in town
FRESHLY cooked pasties are being served up at a new town centre shop which opened in Burnham-On-Sea this week. The Newquay Pasty Shop Company officially open its doors to the public on Monday morning (March 1st) at 36 The High Street. Visitors can choose from more than 20 varieties of pasties.

Fire crews called to nursing home
TWO fire engines from Burnham-On-Sea were called to a retirement home in the town on Tuesday (March 2nd) after a tumble dryer caught fire. Crews rushed to the home in Berrow Road and found the fire within an industrial-sized tumble dryer had already been put out.
Tickets on sale for dance event
TWO Burnham-On-Sea dance groups are set to perform a show in the town's Princess Threatre later this month. Dancefit and The Bay Centre Dancers are currently rehearsing for the event, called Dance School Musical, which will be held on Saturday 27th March at 2.30pm. The audience will be treated to an exciting feast of dance.

3D films hailed a success at Ritz
THE introduction of 3D movies at Burnham-On-Sea's cinema has been hailed a success by its owners. As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com last week, The Ritz in Victoria Street has invested £75,000 in a new state-of-the-art digital projector. The first 3D film, blockbuster Avartar, was watched by film fans at the cinema on Friday.
BBC 'blip' set to affect Burnham
TV viewers across parts of Burnham-On-Sea, Berrow and Brean could automatically receive the Welsh version of the BBC by default after this month's digital switchover. £10k car gutted in arson blaze
Exclusive: STAFF at a vehicle repair centre in the centre of Highbridge have been counting the cost of a deliberate fire which damaged four cars on Friday night (February 26th). Jail break drama in Burnham

Pupils win science competition

FIRE crews from Burnham-On-Sea have tonight (Friday) been battling a blaze at a vehicle repair centre in Highbridge that has left a vintage car badly damaged following an arson attack. HIGHBRIDGE is to get a welcome economic boost after technology giant IBM announced it is creating 50 new jobs with the launch of a new IT support centre. The high-tech facility is scheduled to open on the Isleport Industrial Estate by the middle of this year and bosses are recruiting new staff.

Exclusive: MOTORISTS driving along Burnham-On-Sea's seafront have this week been warned that 'Big Brother' is watching following the introduction of several new police CCTV cameras. A LIFEBOAT crewman in Burnham-On-Sea had his bike stolen while he was inside the RNLI station on a training session. Crew member Ian Tench, pictured here on the far right, had his mountain bike pinched from outside the Pier Street station last Wednesday while he was taking part in a training exercise.
11 new jobs at town pasty shop
ELEVEN new jobs will be created in Burnham-On-Sea next week with the opening of a new cornish pasty shop in the town centre. The Newquay Pasty Shop Company will officially open its doors to the public at 36 The High Street on Monday morning (March 1st), it was confirmed.
£15k boost for Berrow play area
DELIGHTED residents in Berrow are celebrating again this week after securing £15,000 of funding from environmental firm Viridor towards the village's new play area project.
