STRONG onshore winds provided ideal conditions for more than 30 of the UK's top land yachting enthusiasts in Brean at the weekend. Brean Land Yacht Club hosted the annual two-day National Regatta on Brean Beach on both Saturday March 13th and Sunday March 14th.

Exclusive: THREE Burnham-On-Sea residents have been hailed heroes after helping to save the life of an elderly neighbour trapped in a burning house on Sunday evening (March 14th). Three fire crews from Burnham and Bridgwater rushed to St Mark's Road at 8.50pm, as pictured here, after a lady in an adjoining property dialled 999 to report that smoke was emerging from the roof.

CADETS from Burnham-On-Sea's Air Training Corps were rewarded for a busy year of activities when they held their annual presentation evening in Weston at the weekend. The cadets celebrated a busy year which included numerous flying, shooting, adventure training, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and other award events.

A GROUP of students from Burnham-On-Sea met one of the country's top paralympic swimmers during a special event to mark London's 2012 Olympics. Caitlin Berry, Connor McKenna, Fabihha Tarafdar and Tim Bennett represented King Alfred School at the London 2012 Student Leadership Conference last week.

MEMBERS of a Burnham-On-Sea gymnastics club were celebrating more success at the weekend after winning several medals at a regional competition in Taunton. More than 30 members of Monarch Gymnastics Club competed in the South West Prelims over the weekend in Taunton.

Gym's £50k revamp completed
THE £50,000 refurbishment of a Burnham-On-Sea gym has been completed. The final phase of Fit 4 All's modernisation, which began in January, has seen the completion of the upgrade of its resistance equipment, while the free weights area has doubled in size and other kit has been modernised.

POOR weather led to a drop in the number of entries at Burnham-On-Sea's annual flower show on Saturday (March 13th). The event, held at St Andrew's School, attracted 200 entries but the late start to spring meant the overall numbers were down. Burnham's Mayor and Mayoress, Derick and Christine Cooper, were the VIP guests.

STRICTER licensing conditions are to be placed on this Brean pub by Sedgemoor District Council following a number of concerns raised by local police. It comes after Burnham-On-Sea Police this week took the premises license of Krackers Bar to a review by the district council's licensing panel.

THOUSANDS of homes across the Burnham-On-Sea area were suffering low water pressure on Friday (March 12th). Bristol Water, the company that oversees water supplies in the area was investigating a fault. A spokesman confirmed it was experiencing problems.

Exclusive: THESE were the scenes in Burnham-On-Sea on Friday afternoon (March 12th) when fire crews were called to rescue a horse trapped in a muddy rhyne. Two fire crews from Burnham and two from Weston were sent to a field at Pople's Bow just before 1pm after the distressed animal became stranded.

A BURNHAM-On-Sea fire crew was called to tackle a chimney blaze at a property in Berrow on Thursday evening (March 11th). One engine was called to the home in Berrow Road at around 6.15pm, as pictured, after the residents reported their chimney alight. One hose reel jet was used to extinguish the fire.

MEMBERS of Burnham's Medical Equipment Fund have this week handed over a bumper £5,000 cheque to St. Margaret’s Somerset Hospice to fund the cost of a new bed. The fund's Chairman, Tom Ashton, presented the funding to Pam Knight, director of fundraising at the Taunton facilities.

BURNHAM-On-Sea hospital has this week re-opened to new patients after an outbreak of Norovirus was brought under control. BURNHAM-On-Sea police have this week issued two CCTV photos of a woman they want to speak to in connection with a suspected case of fraud at a bank in the town. The woman, who is black with tied back hair, when the fraudulent activity was committed at Lloyds Bank on Burnham High Street last Wednesday (March 3rd).

Beach pool demolition begins
WORK to demolish Burnham-On-Sea's historic beach boating pool began this morning (Wednesday, March 10th). Building contractors started the task of breaking up the stone structure and taking away the huge quantities of rubble. The pool, built in the 1920s, was given to Burnham by members of the Braithwaite family.

TWO groups of generous Burnham residents have raised hundreds of pounds for a local hospice charity. The successful weight loss of members at a Burnham-On-Sea slimming group led to £150 being donated to St. Margaret’s Somerset Hospice, while a Christmas lights display raised more.

A 42-year-old unemployed man from Burnham-On-Sea was charged with two offences of possession of heroin on Monday (March 8th). Neil Edward Cartwright was bailed to appear at Sedgemoor Magistrates Court on 30th March. This follows a police drugs raid as part of a continuing local police crackdown.

A PAIR of Thornback Rays each weighing more than 10lb helped two anglers land the two top places during a sea fishing competition in Burnham on Sunday (March 7th). The decent-sized fish were reeled in from the waters around Stert Island during what is widely seen so far as a poor fishing season.

THE organisers of Brean's annual car rally have this week handed over a bumper cheque for over £2,000 to a national charity. Club Rallysport West, the group behind the two-day rally, gave £2,115 to the charity 'Help for Heroes'. The money came from donations given during the event.

Exclusive: A GROUP of young film makers from Bridgwater was in Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (March 6th), capturing scenes for a 'small screen drama' about the town's beach boating pool. More than 30 residents from the Lawrence Close area held a meeting in the town where they unanimously agreed to fight the plans.

Town celebrates World Book Day
A BURNHAM-On-Sea kindergarten celebrated World Book Day on Thursday (March 4th) with a special reading session attended by a PCSO from the town's police station. The youngsters listened intently while a number of books were read aloud by Burnham's PCSO Pete Williams.
