Seafront golf plans boosted
Exclusive: Ambitious plans to transform part of Burnham-On-Sea's seafront into a £200,000 mini golf course have been given a boost this week. Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported last month how Birmingham entrepreneur Paul Chatwin wants to turn a grassy area of The Esplanade into a large, purpose-built golf park.
Dance show opens this weekend
TWO Burnham-On-Sea dance groups are set to perform a show in the town's Princess Threatre this Saturday (March 27th). Dancers from Dancefit and The Bay Centre Dancers are currently rehearsing for the event, called Dance School Musical. The audience will be treated to dance numbers from Disney and West End Musicals.
MP in drive to halt M5 disruption
BURNHAM-On-Sea's MP has this week attacked the government over unnecessary restrictions on local motorways. David Heathcoat-Amory raised the matter during a debate in the House of Commons with Chris Mole, Parliamentary Under-Secretary. The MP receives many complaints from constituents about unnecesary restrictions.
Fire crews' water skills tested
FIRE fighters from Burnham-On-Sea and across the district gathered in the town's swimming pool for two days of water training earlier this week. The unusual sight of a team of fully-clothed firefighters greeted swimmers at the town's Swim and Sports Academy in Berrow Road, as pictured here.
Flower Power night raises £1k
'FLOWER power' was the theme of The Friends of Burnham Hospital's annual social function at The Oaktree Arena last Saturday night (March 20th). A large number of guests dressed in colourful flower-themed clothes - including Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Derick Cooper.
Photo group gathers in Burnham
PHOTO experts from across the region gathered at the Burnham Area Youth Centre at the weekend when it temporarily became the home of the Western Counties Photographic Federation, whose members were selecting entries for their annual 2010 exhibition which will be held in April/May.

LIFEBOAT charity the RNLI has this week been handed a bumper cheque following a series of coffee mornings at a Burnham-On-Sea Methodist Church. The church's congregation hold regular Saturday fundraising coffee mornings have given help to the RNLI on one Saturday a month.
Bikers descend on M5 services
THE car park at Sedgemoor Services, near Burnham-On-Sea, was alive with the sounds of roaring motorbikes last week when a group of charity bikers gathered. The 200 bikers were en-route to Wooton Bassett in Wiltshire to join a mass bike ride in support of the Afghan Heroes and mothers who have lost sons in the conflict.
St Pat's Day celebrated at club
ST Patrick's Day was celebrated with a night of Irish-themed fun at a Burnham-On-Sea tennis club at the weekend. Members of the Avenue Tennis Club enjoyed an air guitar performance from youngsters James Cameron, Cameron and Jarrod Nell during the evening, as pictured here on the right.
Man assaulted in town centre
Exclusive: POLICE have appealed for witnesses after a man was assaulted in an early morning attack on the forecourt of a Burnham-On-Sea petrol station police at the weekend. Police were called to the Esso petrol station in Love Lane at just after 1.30am on Saturday (March 20th) following the attack, which left the victim with facial injuries.
Top cello player in Brent Knoll
ONE of the UK's leading cellists will be performing a concert in a Brent Knoll church in May. Tickets have just gone on sale for the special concert by Anup Kumar Biswas, who will be playing in St Michael's Church on Saturday, May 15th. Anup has given concerts throughout the UK, including The Royal Albert Hall and St James’ Palace.
Paedophile recalled to prison
A PAEDOPHILE who was believed to be living in Burnham-On-Sea has been recalled to prison after concerns that he may have contacted children on social networking website Facebook. Alain Hegarty has been arrested by police, who are now investigating the incident whether or not he is in breach of his licence.
'Doorstep callers not welcome'
BURNHAM-On-Sea residents and police have stepped up their efforts to ward off unwanted doorstep callers with the launch on Sunday (March 21st) of two 'No Cold Calling Zones'. The zones have been set up by Burnham North PCSO Pete Williams in the St Pauls, St Andrews, St Marys, St Johns and Martins Close areas.
£300k BASC revamp completed
Exclusive: A £300,000 project to modernise a popular Burnham-On-Sea sports centre has been completed and an official opening ceremony is to be held later this week. Burnham's BASC Ground will officially open its refurbished changing facilities and new viewing terrace on Saturday morning (March 27th) at 11am.

Church unveils major overhaul
Exclusive: A major refurbishment of a Burnham-On-Sea church is being planned for later this year. The Roman Catholic Church in Highbridge Road, pictured, has applied for planning permission to make a number of alterations to its entrance and also modernise the interior of the building.
Tourism bosses take to the road
LOCAL tourist bosses from Pontins and Brean Leisure Park were among those who joined forces to promote the Burnham-On-Sea area as a holiday destination to the people of Wales last week. The Somerset Tourism Association tour visited supermarkets in the Cardiff and Swansea area.

Accident cuts power in village
Exclusive: A DOZEN homes in Brent Knoll were without power for seven hours on Friday (March 19th) and a man was treated for minor injuries after a van crashed into an electricity pole, as pictured here. Police closed Burton Row amid fears that the pole, which carries a live electricity supply, could topple onto the road.
Town recycling move welcomed
Exclusive: BUSINESS leaders in Burnham-On-Sea have this week welcomed the move of ten 'ugly' recycling banks which had been the first thing many visitors saw when they stepped off coaches. Burnham-On-Sea Chamber Of Trade has been campaigning for over a year to get skips re-located from the rear of Morrisons.

TWO huge cranes towered over Burnham-On-Sea's Sailing Club on Thursday morning (March 18th) when the spring 'crane-in' saw 19 boats hoisted into the River Brue. The annual tradition is arranged each Spring by Burnham Sailing Club when the boats are lifted out of the yard down to the pontoons.
Handbag stolen in car break-in
Exclusive: THIEVES smashed a car window and stole a handbag during a break-in at a Highbridge car park earlier this week. The grey VW Golf was attacked outside Highbridge Scout Hut in Coronation Road between 3.05pm and 3.15pm on Monday afternoon (March 15th) when a passanger window was smashed.
Swim gala won by town school
DELIGHTED members of the swimming team at Burnham-On-Sea's St Andrew's School made a splash on Wednesday (March 17th) when they were crowned Sedgemoor Schools Swimming Champions. The team won first place at the Sedgemoor Schools Gala in Burnham, which was held at the town's sports academy.
Free clay modelling workshop
VISITORS to Highbridge's Apex Park will be able to enjoy a free wildlife clay workshop over the Easter holiday next month. Children aged between 5 and 9 years old are beiung invited to attend the creative, and messy, activity which will be held on Saturday April 3rd from 10am-12 noon.

THE classic British musical Peter Pan opened on Thursday (March 18th) in Burnham-On-Sea's Princess Theatre. Members of Mark Youth Theatre are holding four performances of the entertaining show, starting tonight at 7.30pm and then continuing on Friday and Saturday.
Crime fighting goes high tech!
Exclusive: POLICE in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge are getting a high-tech weapon to help them in their fight against crime. Police Officers & PCSOs are being being issued with PDAs to help them out on their beats across the two towns. The handheld computers enable officers to access detailed logs about incidents.

New hours for tourist centre
WITH Easter fast approaching, Burnham-On-Sea's Tourist Information Centre will soon be opening seven days a week as the annual holiday season gets underway. From Monday 29th March, the centre's opening hours will be 10.00am – 4.00pm daily when visitors can buy tickets and book accommodation.
Town church event helps charity
HUNDREDS of pounds was raised for a cancer charity when fundraisers in Burnham-On-Sea held a special fundraising day earlier this week. The event was held at Burnham-On-Sea Baptist Church in College Street during 'Yummy Mummy' week and helped to raise cash for CLIC.
Pontin's man receives award
THE manager of a Brean holiday park has this week been given an award to thank him for his work with GCSE students at Highbridge's King Alfred School. Brian Howe, Training Manager, has been working closely with GCSE Leisure and Tourism classes for more than three years.
Sea King helicopter visits town
A HUGE RAF Sea King helicopter landed in Burnham-On-Sea on Wednesday evening (March 17th) when its crew took part in a local rescue exercise. The 62ft long helicopter landed at the BASC ground where it was welcomed by the town's Scouts, Coastguards, RNLI and the fire service.

A PROPERTY in the centre of Highbridge could soon be turned into a new development of 14 flats, a restaurant and a leisure facility. Property Link has submitted an application for Outline Planning Permission to the district council for the redevelopment of Canal House.
Couple in runaway wedding!
A BURNHAM-On-Sea couple have tied the knot in a spur-of-the-moment wedding at Scotland's legendary Gretna Green. Gary and Rebecca Jones (nee Tipton) told their family and friends they were going away for a quiet holiday in Cornwall, but instead they got hitched.
New woodturning club launches
A NEW club aimed at woodturning enthusiasts is being launched in Burnham-On-Sea this month. George Foweraker and John Brewer are starting the new Burnham-On-Sea Woodturning Club to raise the profile of the hobby locally and help people get started. Stranger danger alert for pupils
Exclusive: PUPILS at a Highbridge school have this week been issued with a 'stranger danger' warning after a man was spotted acting suspiciously outside its gates on several occasions. Man arrested after bar incident
POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward following an incident at a seafront bar in Burnham-On-Sea earlier this week in which one man was arrested. At around 2.25am on Sunday morning (March 14th) an altercation occurred between a member of door staff and a member of the public.
Final pool piece won't be saved
Exclusive: A FINAL piece of Burnham-On-Sea's dismantled beach boating pool will NOT be retained after all, the district council has decided this week. We reported at the weekend how contractors working on the demolition had reserved a final chunk of the landmark to move onto The Esplanade.
Wind farm campaign gathers pace
DOZENS of villagers near Burnham-On-Sea have stepped up their campaign to prevent huge new wind turbines being built near their homes. Residents from East and West Huntspill attended a public meeting last week, as pictured below, where they said the huge structures would blight the landscape and destroy wildlife.
Meet the world's biggest lamb!
THIS newly born lamb in East Huntspill has been in the national media spotlight this week after being called the world's largest after weighing in at a massive 23lb. The stocky-legged animal is three times the size of a normal lamb and farmer Ken Jones was a little puzzled about the birth.
Runner raises £550 for charity
A BURNHAM-On-Sea teaching assistant has successfully raised hundreds of pounds for a charity close to her heart. Sam Stockham, who works at Brent Knoll School, was among the 11,000 runners taking part in last week's Bath Half Marathon to raise money for MPS, a charity that helps her godson.

STRONG onshore winds provided ideal conditions for more than 30 of the UK's top land yachting enthusiasts in Brean at the weekend. Brean Land Yacht Club hosted the annual two-day National Regatta on Brean Beach on both Saturday March 13th and Sunday March 14th.

CADETS from Burnham-On-Sea's Air Training Corps were rewarded for a busy year of activities when they held their annual presentation evening in Weston at the weekend. The cadets celebrated a busy year which included numerous flying, shooting, adventure training, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and other award events.
Students meet top Paralympian
A GROUP of students from Burnham-On-Sea met one of the country's top paralympic swimmers during a special event to mark London's 2012 Olympics. Caitlin Berry, Connor McKenna, Fabihha Tarafdar and Tim Bennett represented King Alfred School at the London 2012 Student Leadership Conference last week.
More medal wins for gymnasts
MEMBERS of a Burnham-On-Sea gymnastics club were celebrating more success at the weekend after winning several medals at a regional competition in Taunton. More than 30 members of Monarch Gymnastics Club competed in the South West Prelims over the weekend in Taunton.
Gym's £50k revamp completed
THE £50,000 refurbishment of a Burnham-On-Sea gym has been completed. The final phase of Fit 4 All's modernisation, which began in January, has seen the completion of the upgrade of its resistance equipment, while the free weights area has doubled in size and other kit has been modernised.
Proud moment for town PCSO
A POPULAR member of Highbridge's police team has this week received a top accolade after being named 'PCSO Of The Year' for Somerset West in the annual Community Policing Awards. PCSO Gill Bawler received her award from Dr Moira Hamlin, Chair of the Police Community Trust and Police Authority, as pictured.
