Man held after bomb incident
Exclusive: A man who threatened to set off a bomb outside Burnham-On-Sea police station and kill five police officers was arrested after a dramatic incident on Friday evening (September 10th). Police said the middle-aged man was arrested outside the police station with a bottle.
Cyclists boost tennis academy
A group of cyclists jumped on their bikes to raise money for a good cause in Burnham-On-Sea on Sunday (September 12th). Almost 20 members and supporters of Burnham's Nathan Edwards Tennis Academy took part in a sponsored cycle ride along the beach from Burnham jetty to Berrow and back.
Thieves strike at Berrow church
Exclusive: THOUSANDS of pounds of lead have been stolen from the roof of Berrow Church in a third attack on the familiar landmark. Thieves scrambled onto the roof of St Mary's at Berrow over the past week, removing lead guttering and causing damage to the roof, as pictured here.
Historic ship passes Burnham
THE historic 50 year-old ship Balmoral glided past Burnham-On-Sea on its annual trip to pick up passengers this morning (Monday, September 13th). The Balmoral was on a trip up the River Parrett to Dunball, near Bridgwater, to collect several hundred passengers booked on an excursion.

Six injured in three-car crash
SIX people have been rushed to hospital after a serious three-car accident on the A370 near Burnham-On-Sea today (Sunday, September 12th). Emergency services from Burnham rushed to the entrance to the Carbase car showroom in Lympsham at 12.26pm following the collision.
West End singers in Highbridge
TWO West End singers performed a fundraising concert in Highbridge on Sunday afternoon (September 12th). Philip Lee, formerly from Highbridge, and friend Aaron Romano performed a varied selection of opera, stage and film songs in front of 100 people.
Burnt dinner sparks fire drama
SUNDAY lunch turned into a drama for a Burnham-On-Sea family on September 12th when their cooker caught on fire. Firefighters were called to a house at the junction of Love Lane and St Peter's Road at 12.45pm, as pictured, after the alarm was raised. The food in the cooker had burnt.
Land yachts beat the weather!
A lack of wind almost blew away plans for a 12-hour endurance land yachting event to be held in Brean. A breeze is essential to blow the land yachts along the beach, but when calm conditions settled over the beach as the event was launched, members of Brean Land Yachting Club decided to go ahead anyway.
Pool expansion work begins
Exclusive: Work has this week begun on creating a £500,000 expansion at Burnham-On-Sea's Swim and Sports Academy. Bulldozers have demolished the walkways and paved area at the front of the property in Berrow Road, as pictured, to make way for the brand new pool and two-storey fitness complex.

High tide sweeps beach clean
ONE of the highest tides of the year gave Burnham-On-Sea's beach a good clean on Saturday morning (September 11th). The town's flood gates were closed by the Environment Agency at the jetty and Maddock's Slade as a precaution. A 12 metre high tide swept in on Friday night.
Free first aid sessions in town
RESIDENTS in the Burnham-On-Sea area can brush up their first aid skills by taking part in a series of free courses next month. Three first aid sessions are to be held in Highbridge's Morland Hall on 7th and 14th October from 9.30am to 1pm and on 21st October from 9.30am to 11.30am.
Mayor welcomes Danish visitors
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Mayor and Mayoress gave a formal welcome to a group of Danish Rotarians on Friday night (September 10th). Burnham-On-Sea Rotary Club is entertaining the 18 Rotarians and wives from Vojens in Denmark as part of a regular visit by the group every four years.
Police issue security warning
Exclusive: BURNHAM-On-Sea Police have urged residents to check the security of their homes after ten break-ins over the past month. Officers are investigating the spate of residential burglaries across the Burnham area in which the offenders entered properties through insecure doors and windows.
Counterfeit clothing seized
Exclusive: BURNHAM-On-Sea police and Trading Standards officers have seized thousands of pounds of counterfeit clothing in Brean this week. Over 20 boxes of materials were taken away from a Brean car boot sale. The 20 boxes included clothing from various manufacturers.
Seal spotted on Stert Island
Exclusive: A rare sighting of a grey seal on Stert Island caused a stir among seafront walkers in Burnham-On-Sea today (Thursday, September 9th). Telescope user Greg Dye-Hodge Beardsley spotted the mammal on the eastern side of the island, as pictured here.

A NIGHT of 'spontaneous and exuberant' entertainment is promised when a popular band performs in Burnham-On-Sea this Saturday (September 11th). The Carnival Band, who often feature on BBC Radio 2 and have also been played on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM, are renowned for turning musical convention on its head.
Village green bid gathers pace
Exclusive: Controversial plans to turn Burnham's seafront lawns into an official 'village green' took a step forward this week when the consultation period for the proposals opened. Signs outlining the proposals have been put up along The Esplanade by Somerset County Council as part of its consultation process.
Missing mum found near town
A nationwide search for a missing teenage girl, her boyfriend and their 10-month-old daughter has ended after they were found safe and well at a holiday park near Burnham-On-Sea. Police thanked the public for their help in locating the young missing couple, who were found on Thursday (September 9th).
More success for tennis group
YOUNG tennis players from Burnham's Nathan Edwards Tennis Academy were on top form when they played at a tournament in Taunton this week. The event was the culmination of The Tony Pryce Mini Series, held at the Blackbrook Sports Centre, which consists of five tournaments, one a month for five months, in which players accumulate points based on their results.
TV couple stay in Burnham
Exclusive: A BURNHAM-On-Sea guesthouse has this week been the home for a couple who are appearing in Channel 4's tea-time reality series 'Coach Trip'. Ray and Glenys Knight, pictured, spent several nights at Magnolia House Guesthouse in Manor Road after abandoning their camping holiday due to poor weather.
New alcohol-free zone to launch
A NEW no-drinking zone is to be launched in the centre of Highbridge later this year in an effort to crackdown on anti-social behaviour. Town councillors this week voted in favour of making Highbridge's Town Green and the area next to the community hall, pictured, an official alcohol-free zone.
Lucky escape in bus stop crash
Exclusive: A motorist had a lucky escape after suffering just cuts and bruises after her car ploughed into this bus stop in Berrow on Wednesday afternoon (September 8th). Emergency services were called to Coast Road after a Kia ploughed into this bus shelter, which was fortunately empty at the time.
Allotments scheme re-think
DISAPPOINTED members of Highbridge Residents Association have this week been forced to re-think their plans to start a new community allotment project in the town. The group, pictured above, had hoped to open a set of community allotments on unused land next to Queen Square, but the plans have fallen through.
Carnival switch wins council backing
Exclusive: Controversial proposals to hold Burnham and Highbridge's Carnival on Remembrance Sunday in 2012 have this week been given the go-ahead by town councillors despite concerns about the clash of the two events. The town's Carnival Committee wants to move the popular November event from its usual Monday night slot to Sundays in two years.

Pedestrianisation hopes boosted
A MAJOR project to partially pedestrianise part of Burnham-On-Sea's High Street received a major boost on Monday evening (September 6th) when district councillors gave a thumbs-up to funding the scheme. If the plans are given a final 'green light' by Sedgemoor District Council's Executive later this month, a new pedestrian-only zone will be introduced.

BURNHAM-On-Sea MP Tessa Munt has been cleared of allegations of falsely claiming a single occupier council tax discount. The Liberal Democrat member of parliament has always denied any wrongdoing over national newspaper allegations that she had friends living with her.
Missing man sparks night search
A HUGE search for a missing person on Burnham-On-Sea beach was launched in the early hours of this morning (Monday, September 6th). Burnham's rescue hovercraft The Spirit Of Lelaina was launched at 12.15am to help two teams of Coastguards from Burnham and Weston search for the 40-year-old man.

SEDGEMOOR District Council hopes to stamp out flyposting in the Burnham-On-Sea area by adopting a new 'zero tolerance' policy and hefty fines. Following numerous complaints, Sedgemoor says it is to begin issuing fines of up to £2,500 to those that break bye-laws.

Cyclists pedal through town
A GROUP of cyclists who are pedalling their way from Land's End to John O'Groats rolled into Burnham-On-Sea for lunch on Sunday (September 5th). The group of 11 cyclists, who all work at the Lindsey Oil Refinery near Grimsby, hope to raise £5,000 for Cancer Research for their efforts.

FOLK music fans were treated to a feast of entertainment when more than 75 musical acts and dance groups performed at eight venues across Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (September 4th) during the town's fifth annual Folkfest. The third day of the event was watched by large crowds of music fans.
Hot rods and trucks in town
Includes Video: ALMOST 100 classic American hot rods, trucks and vehicles thundered through Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday lunchtime (September 4th) in a mass procession for charity. The Blue Ridge Runners hold their cruise each year through the Burnham area.
Town library escapes cutbacks
STAFF at Burnham-On-Sea library breathed a sigh of relief on Friday (September 3rd) when they escaped the first round of a huge cost-cutting exercise by Somerset County Council, however bosses have warned that further economies will have to be found. Council Leader Ken Maddock announced the news.
Town's Folkfest gets started
POPULAR folk group Dambuskers opened Burnham-On-Sea's four-day Folkfest on Thursday night (September 2nd) with a great performance at the town's Ritz Club. A crowd of supporters flocked to listen to the group, who include 'wild man of folk' Steve Ruffe and fiddle virtuoso Chloe Watson.
Crews tackle rubbish blaze
BURNHAM-On-Sea firefighters were called to tackle a large rubbish blaze besides the M5 motorway on Thursday evening (September 2nd). Crews used hose reel jets to bring the blaze under control in Edingworth, near East Brent, at 6.50pm. One fire engine from Burnham was called to Edingworth, near East Brent.
Pull on your walking boots!
PEOPLE in the Burnham-On-Sea area are being encouraged to pull on their walking boots and join a series of walks, which start on Monday (September 6th). Sedgemoor District Council's Healthy Lifestyles team is launching a 'Walking for Health' programme featuring several guided walks.
Oops... Mini driver gets a shock!
THE driver of this car in Burnham-On-Sea could be forgiven for parking on double yellow lines earlier this week. The mini driver got a shock when he came to a shuddering halt - and found a whole front wheel had fallen off in front of bemused drinkers at Chaplins bar.
