Fire crews tackle town blaze
A faulty washing machine is being blamed for causing a fire in Burnham-On-Sea this morning (Monday, September 27th). Two fire engines from Burnham were sent to Monks Way, as pictured here, at 10.16am after spoke was seen issuing from a bungalow. On their arrival, the crews confirmed the incident had been caused by a washing machine on fire.
School in evacuation drama
A HISTORY lesson came alive for dozens of schoolchildren when they re-enacted a wartime evacuation in Highbridge this week. Ninety children from Walliscote Primary near Weston travelled by train to Highbridge Railway Station dressed in wartime costumes, holding their ration packs. During the trip, they visited Highbridge's historic Frank Foley statue.
Lifeboat crew in helicopter drill
A group of Burnham-On-Sea lifeboat crewmembers has completed a day's training with the RAF rescue helicopter. Burnham RNLI was invited to train for a day with the RAF Chivenor crew at its base in Devon, which they undertook last Thursday. The crew were kitted up with RAF flying suits.
Coin collector thanked by RNLI
A fundraiser who has collected hundreds of pounds worth of five pence coins for Burnham-On-Sea RNLI has been presented with a photo of the lifeboats as a thank you. Ron Bowling and his wife Freda from Lancashire have been regular holiday visitors to Burnham for many years.
Martin competes in GB team
A Burnham-On-Sea athlete competed in the Great Britain team at the World Duathlon Championships this week. Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported in May how Martin Rogers, who works at Burnham Swim and Sports Academy, was selected to represent the country at the event in Edinburgh.
Calling all young video makers!
Police are challenging up-and-coming young directors, screenwriters and actors in the Burnham-On-Sea area to tackle binge drinking and alcohol related crime in a short film competition. The competition has been launched by Avon and Somerset Police as part of their 'Relentless on Keeping you Safe' campaign.
Tattoo fundraiser makes his mark
A FORMER Burnham-On-Sea soldier has raised hundreds of pounds for Help For Heroes by having the charity's logo tattooed onto his back. David Keatley held the sponsored tattoo at Burnham's Inked Images tattoo shop in College Street on Saturday (September 25th). Over £500 had been raised by Saturday morning, with further funding promised from generous sponsors.
Council to publish framework
Sedgemoor District Council will this week publish its blueprint for the Burnham-On-Sea area for the next 16 years - and is inviting public feedback on the proposals. The Submission Core Strategy is a key component of the Local Development Framework that sets out the policies which will guide development in our area up until 2026.
Two killed in M5 car fire
Two people died in a car fire on the M5 between Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge on Friday night (September 24th). Police have appealed for witnesses after a man and woman who were travelling southbound in a white Citroen BX were killed close to junction 23. The car ended up on the hard shoulder on fire and caused long queues of traffic in the area.
Class of 1982 ready for reunion
If you are a former pupil of Highbridge's King Alfred School who left in the summer of 1982, then an evening of reminiscing and memories is on offer. A reunion is being organised for Saturday 9th October in the old school hall from 7.30pm-midnight when a bar, 1980s disco and refreshments will be laid on.
Teenager jailed for sex offences
A 19-year-old man from Highbridge has been jailed for sex offences against a teenage girl. Benjamin Dewhirst, 19, of Burnham Road, pleaded guilty to two offences of rape, a sexual assault and two assaults causing actual bodily harm. Judge Graham Hume Jones sentenced him following a case at Taunton Crown Court.
Burnham group helps tots fund
MEMBERS of Burnham-On-Sea's Inner Wheel Club have this week presented a cheque for more than £1,500 to an appeal fund that provides intensive care cots for young children. The group's Immediate Past President, Sandra Squire, accompanied by President Janet Breed, Sue Newbery and Sandra Moon visited St Michael's Hospital in Bristol.
Raising a cuppa for charity
HUNDREDS of pounds was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support on Friday (September 24th) when residents across the Burnham-On-Sea area took part in the World's Biggest Coffee Morning. Burnham's Mayor, Michael Clarke attended one event at Apex Park in Highbridge and others were held at Sanders Garden World in Brent Knoll and at Berrow.

A FAN of ITV's X-Factor has stunned staff at this Highbridge bookmakers shop by putting a £1,000 bet on a twice-failed contestant to win the show. The anonymous punter placed his wager at the town's William Hill branch in Market Street. With odds of 20/1, the man stands to win a huge £20,000 if Marlon McKenzie can win.
DNA sea survey started
SCIENTISTS are completing Somerset's first ever comprehensive study of DNA extracted from water samples in an attempt to further improve bathing water quality in the Bristol Channel. Wessex Water is leading a project to complete microbial source tracking (MST) in Burnham-On-Sea plus Weston and other coastal towns.
Child rollerbladed on railway line
A photographer has caught on camera the moment that a reckless youngster rollerbladed along a railway line moments before a train thundered through Highbridge Railway Station. The boy was spotted jumping off a platform with a pal to perform the stunt, which was first mentioned on Burnham-On-Sea's discussion forums here last weekend.
Shock over rescued swan's injuries
THIS was the disturbing image that met a rescue boat crew from Burnham-On-Sea this week when they helped wildlife carers reach an injured swan. BARB's rescue boat was called to Westhay, near Shapwick, to help Secret World's carers reach the distressed bird, which had swallowed a fishing line.
Centre's aid for operatic society
STAFF at Sanders Garden World near Burnham-On-Sea have this week come to the rescue of a musical being staged at The Playhouse Theatre in Weston-super-Mare. New boost for Civic Pride plans
A 210,000 project to partially pedestrianise Burnham-On-Sea's High Street received a further boost on Wednesday (September 22nd) when district council bosses gave a thumbs-up to the scheme. Sedgemoor District Council's Executive unanimously agreed that over 158,000 of funding can be spent on creating a new pedestrian-only zone.

Floral 'extravaganza' opens in town
COLOURFUL artwork with a 'floral extravaganza' theme has gone on show at a new exhibition in Burnham-On-Sea. Ten artists are taking part in the event being held at Sea Breeze gallery in Victoria Street throughout this month. The floral theme includes paintings in a variety of media ranging from watercolours and pastels to oils and acrylics.

Local artists open studios
ARTISTS across the Burnham-On-Sea area will be opening their studios to the public this month for the annual Somerset Arts Weeks. The event runs from September 18th to October 3rd and will see over a dozen local artists displaying their works across the Burnham area.
Boat aground on Stert Island
Coastguards called out Burnham-On-Sea's rescue hovercrafts on Monday morning (20th September) to check on the welfare of a man onboard a boat that had run aground on Stert Island. BARB's Light Of Elizabeth flew two Coastguard crewmembers out onto the island at 11.30am to check that the man, who was aged in his late 70s, was safe.
Classic car in wedding day drama
Exclusive: The driver of this 1928 classic vehicle was lucky to escape with only bumps and scratches after it plunged off the road near Burnham-On-Sea at the weekend. Emergency services from Burnham rushed to The Causeway between East Huntspill and Woolavington after the driver lost control of the 1928 Packard on Saturday.
Youth club appeals for leaders
HIGHBRIDGE Community Youth Club has this week issued an appeal for new leaders to come forward to avoid it having to turn away youngsters. The long-running club, which is based at Morland Youth Hall, requires leaders aged 16 and above to help at its weekly Tuesday sessions.
£1,000 raised at Memory Walk
DOZENS of supporters of The Alzheimer's Society pulled on their walking boots to take part in an annual sponsored walk in Brean on Sunday afternoon (19th September). Almost 50 people took part in the Memory Walk, which started from Brean Leisure Park, and offered two routes.
Bird release drama on Brean Down
VOLUNTEERS from Burnham-On-Sea rescue charity BARB were on hand to help wildlife carers after the release of a sea bird didn't go to plan on the top of Brean Down on Saturday afternoon (September 18th). An injured Manx Shearwater that had been nursed back to health over several weeks by East Huntspill's Secret World was released.
Teenager killed in crash is named
A 19 year-old man died in a fireball horror near Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (September 18th) has been named. Billy Davis died after his BMW car burst into flames after crashing into a telegraph pole and leaving the road on the A370 Bridgwater Road in East Brent. Two teenage passengers who were also in the vehicle scrambled free.
Stolen motorbike recovered
A STOLEN motorbike found dumped on Brean beach on Saturday (September 18th) has been returned to its owner. The village's beach warden, Dave Furber, alerted police after spotting the bike dumped in soft sand on the beach close to Brean Down, as pictured here.

PUPILS at St Joseph's school in Burnham-On-Sea received a history lesson with a difference on Friday (September 17th). Cycling enthusiast Andy Brewer visited the school's Year 5 children with a replica Penny Farthing bicycle wearing period costume.

Bird strike cuts power to 9,700
THOUSANDS of homes across Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge were briefly without electricity on Thursday afternoon (September 16th) after a bird struck power lines. Western Power Distribution, which oversees the supply in our area, said the brief interruption, lasting just a few seconds, affected residents in both towns at around 1.30pm.
Fire-hit hotel 'is not for sale'
THE owner of the Highbridge Hotel and former cattle market site has rejected reports that the site is up for sale by assuring them that he is only seeking backers to regenerate the site. Estate agent boards have appeared outside the fire-damaged Grade II-listed hotel building over the past week, as McKinlays of Taunton promote "town centre development opportunities."
Charity donates unwanted duvets
SO many duvets and pillows have been donated to East Huntspill's Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre that it has been unable to store them and it is donating them to an organisation caring for homeless people instead. The charity has this week handed over the surplus quilts and pillows to The Taunton Assocation For The Homeless.
Hinkley Point opposition grows
Opposition to EDF's plans to build two new nuclear reactors at Hinkley Point is growing, with the district council this week expressing 'very serious concerns' about the proposals, just days after a protest was held on the environmental impact. Sedgemoor District Council is set to raise what it calls "very serious concerns" over EDF's proposals for Hinkley Point C.
Council 'committed' to Princess
Exclusive: SEDGEMOOR District Council has said it is 'fully committed' to keeping Burnham-On-Sea's Princess Threatre open despite controversially abandoning the procurement process to find a new owner for the building last week. Fireworks barge plan is axed
Exclusive: Plans to use a barge in the middle of Bridgwater Bay to launch thousands of fireworks during Burnham-On-Sea's annual display have been scrapped this week. Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported in July how a high tide occurring on the night of the display, on Sunday November 7th, meant the organisers had decided to launch the pyrotechnics from a floating barge because the jetty will be underwater.
Car upturns in ditch accident
Exclusive: SLIPPERY road conditions were blamed for this accident near Burnham-On-Sea on Tuesday evening (September 14th). A Fiat Punto ended up on its side in a roadside ditch after its driver lost control and left the road following a heavy rain storm. Police said there were no injuries.
Stranded 4x4 rescued on beach
THE owner of this 4x4 got a sinking feeling when it became stuck on Burnham-On-Sea beach this afternoon (Tuesday, September 14th). The vehicle sank into soft sand next to the town's jetty when its owner, from Gloucestershire, tried to retrieve a jet ski from the beach.
20 acre expansion for golf course
Exclusive: BREAN Golf Club has unveiled plans to expand its course onto nearby agricultural land. Bosses at Brean Leisure Park have applied to Sedgemoor District Council for planning permission to redesign the existing course and expand it onto 20 acres of land to the south east of the current playing area.
Clock project gets £10k boost
Exclusive: THE project to replace Highbridge Town Clock has been given a financial boost this week. Burnham and Highbridge Town Council has been told by Sedgemoor District Council that 10,000 of community arts funding from Raglan Homes, which is building a new development of houses next to the town's Asda store, can be spent on a replacement clock.
Bandstand marathon in town
TBurnham-On-Sea will be among more than 80 towns taking part in a nationwide bandstand marathon later this month. Town bands will be playing across the UK in the second annual Bandstand Marathon on Sunday 26th September. Clevedon Brass Band will perform a free concert in the Manor Gardens.
