Highbridge take-away’s late night opening plans are approved

-

Plans by a fast food outlet in the centre of Highbridge to open until the early hours of the morning at weekends have this week been approved by the district council after the owners backed down on proposals to open until 1.30am.

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported in October that Yummies Pizza in Market Street had applied to Sedgemoor District Council’s licensing department to open until 1.30am at weekends.

But the applicants attended a meeting of the district council’s licensing committee in Bridgwater on Thursday (December 17th) where they changed their request to 12.30am instead – an hour earlier.

Steve Taylor of Sedgemoor District Council told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The application was approved, subject to the changes.”

“Yummies will be able to open on Sundays to Thursdays until 11.59pm, while on Fridays and Saturdays it will open until 12.30am. This reduction of one hour from the original application of 1.30am was offered by the applicant.”

The council has also requested that signs are displayed at the premises at all times requesting people to leave quietly. The council also requested that all rubbish from the premises, within a radius of 25 metres of the shop, must be collected and properly disposed of at the close of business each day.

Local councillors Janet Keen and Joe Leach had recently spoken out against the proposals, along with several nearby residents.

Cllr Leach told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Market Street is in a residential area and selling take-away food until 1.30am would lead to an increase in people coming and going very late into the night, disturbing local residents. We might also see such opening hours causing public disorder issues. A dangerous precedent would be set.”
