Plans have been unveiled to introduce a new ‘Junior Civic Awards’ intitiative in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge to recognise the work of local young people in our community.
Town councillor Nick Tolley, pictured, has unveiled the proposals for the ‘Burnham and Highbridge Young Achievers Awards’ at the latest Town Council meeting.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “After many years of success with our annual Civic Awards, and many more to follow, I was approached by several members of the public asking if we could do some sort of similar award on a yearly basis to honour and recognise some of the youngsters in our two towns for exceptional or noteworthy actions or achievements.”
“Aimed at the under 18s, I would like our Council to establish a new yearly award on this basis.”
“Nominations would be promoted through local media and a panel of pre-award scrutineers would be set up to make a short-list.”
“Nominations could come from schools, parents, relatives or friends to highlight why the young person in question should be honoured.”
“I feel this Council will benefit by getting closer to youths in our two towns while encouraging and promoting positive actions of reward for special and caring individuals.”
A summer awards presentation ceremony is being planned to take place along with an entertainment show staged completely by local young people.
He added that the awards would be presented to winning children across several age categories.
Town councillors warmly welcomed the proposals and said they are keen to proceed with the plans during 2018.
