Burnham-On-Sea RNLI crews were called out after a 30ft yacht was reported to be aground near Stert Island on Monday evening (August 20th).
The town’s D Class lifeboat Burnham Reach was launched at around 9.50pm, closely followed by the Atlantic 75 lifeboat Staines Whitfield at 10.05pm.
The yacht was located to the West of Stert Island, and the yachtsman was assisted in re-floating his craft.
The Burnham lifeboat crews escorted the yachtsman to safe waters. Since it was soon after low water, he was unable to return to his moorings in the River Brue.
The yachtsman was suitably well-equipped and after some discussion was left to self-navigate into the Brue as soon as there was enough water to reach his berth.
The volunteer crews were therefore stood down by Coastguard control, and the boats were returned to Burnham slipway for recovery and wash down by the shore crew.
Helmsman Tim Walters said: “He was well equipped with life jackets. We ensured he was safe and out of danger before leaving him to proceed independently.”
