Burnham-On-Sea’s late night shopping evening was cancelled last week after too few traders confirmed they would stay open.
Only eight per cent of traders committed to staying open until 8pm last Friday, which meant organisers from the Chamber of Trade decided to call off the event.
The Chamber says the date of the event was first announced last May at the Chamber’s AGM, as reported here, and then communicated again in three newsletters distributed to traders in the following months and in follow-up emails and meetings.
“Regrettably, there just wasn’t enough interest for us to go ahead despite the event being a great success in some previous years at attracting extra shoppers into the town,” says Chamber Treasurer Deryk Monaghan.
A meeting is to be held by the Chamber on Monday, January 26th at 6pm in The Princess Theatre when members will be able to discuss how they’d like the event run next year.
Meanwhile, the Chamber of Trade has been busy over the past week distributing Shoppers Guides to residents and launching a ‘shop local’ campaign to promote shops and small businesses in the town in the run-up to Christmas. The Chamber also oversaw the successful Xmas lights switch-on in Burnham last month when record crowds were drawn to the town centre.
