Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards were called to Brean beach on Friday afternoon (September 2nd) amid concern that a suspected piece of ordnance may have been uncovered in the sand.
Brean’s beachwarden raised the alarm after a group of metal detector enthusiasts found the ‘suspect’ object which they thought could be a WW2 landmine.
“When we arrived on scene the beach warden had put in place a small cordon around the object,” said Burnham Coastguard Officer Dave Welland, pictured.
“We had a look without disturbing it and decided that it may be live.”
“We widened the cordon to a safer distance and an officer who has a bomb disposal expertise arrived on scene and inspected it. With his training he established that it wasn’t in fact a WW2 mine, but a harmless piece of metal.”
“If you uncover something on the beach that you think could be harmful the dial 999 and ask for the Coastguards.”
“The group of metal detector enthusiasts did the right thing, they stopped digging and informed the Beach Warden on duty.”
