Hundreds of people helped smash the world record for the most sandcastles built in one hour on Burnham-On-Sea beach on Saturday (June 2nd).
An estimated crowd of 500 residents took part in the record attempt as part of Burnham’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations – and, unofficially, a new record of 993 was built in the hour, easily breaking the previous record of 571.
Steve Bird, one of the organising team, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are absolutely thrilled to bits to have got so much support and to have beaten the record. Everyone was so enthusiastic and there was a great atmosphere.”
“We will have to wait several weeks for the Guinness Book of Records to confirm the record – but our count shows it has been smashed, so a huge thanks goes to everyone who took part and supported us.”
Among those taking part was Burnham-On-Sea’s MP Tessa Munt, pictured below, and Burnham’s Mayor, Ken Smout.
Ken told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This has been a marvelous effort from so many people and is a wonderful example of how great things can come from working together as a community. Well done all!”
The event was also held to raise money and awareness for The Coastguard Association, the BARB rescue hovercraft, Burnham Lions and the RNLI.
The event was organised by a team of volunteers comprising Ian Jefferies, Steve Bird, Greg Kelloway, Mark Newman and Tim Walters.
Burnham’s local business community supported the event with backers including Sunspot Amusements, The Pavillion, The Oaktree, Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, Toy Cupboard, Seabreeze, Galley Cafe, Burnham-On-Sea.com, Skye Bar, Sedgemoor District Council and Burnham Swim Academy. Brian Beale from Burnham Harriers also provided the clock.
All participants in the world record received a certificate of participation in the Marine Cove gardens afterwards.
Post-story note: It was later confirmed that the world record bid had been unsuccessful by the organisers.
