A group of four cyclists from Burnham-On-Sea and Wells have today (Friday) set off on a bid set a new World Record.
The road bike relay team – Karl Burkett, Steve Clark, Ollie Taylor and Tim Clark – are attempting to cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End in 48 hours or less.
The cyclists set off today from Scotland and aim to finish on Sunday 25th June by 10.30am or before.
One of the local riders, Karl Burkett, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are riding as a relay team – the first man will ride an 80km leg, then the second will ride the same and so on, so there is only ever one rider on the road at any one time.”
“We aim to do this in 48 hours or less – Guiness Records have verified our application and excepted it, so we would set an all-time new world record for the team relay road ride.”
“We have had all the rules and verifications set and authorised. The rules are that road bikes only can be used, not Time Trial, no aero bars, no disc wheels, No TT helmets. Each rider has to use the same bike for the whole event, no drifting of the team car, each rider rides solo.”
“We will need to keep a constant average speed of around 28kmph which might sound easy but is not. Just the logistics alone are a big challenge, bringing a support crew together, finding a motorhome for the riders, a support car, and funds for the fuel.”
“We know the generosity of the public and hope people can help us achieve our small goal of raising £500, it really does mean a lot to us, as this alone will cover all the fuel costings for the vehicles over 1,700 miles.”
