Burnham-On-Sea schoolchildren to take part in world-record bid

-

Children from across Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge will be taking part in a world record attempt for the most people signing and singing at the same time next month.

The national charity SignHealth is hoping 15,000 schoolchildren including several hundred from the Burnham area will join in the event on February 9th.

Steve Powell, Chief Executive at SignHealth, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Our Guinness World Records project is an attempt to break the record for the most people singing and signing a song simultaneously.”

“The current record is 13,418 people and we’re hoping to smash this while also raising awareness of deafness and the work we are doing. The event will also be a fundraiser for the charity through sponsorship from businesses and a suggested donation of £2 for everyone taking part.”

“Young people from all over the country will learn to sign The New Seekers 1970s song ‘I’d like to Teach the World to Sing’. The group has re-recorded its hit single especially for this event and is lending its support to the project.”

SignHealth is a healthcare charity for deaf people which provides health-related services for deaf people.

The world record attempt is primarily aimed at Key Stage One and Two youngsters, however other children and adults can join in if they wish.

Steve added: “Any schools from Burnham and Highbridge that decide to take part will be joining hundreds of schools all over the country at 2.45pm on February 9th when they attempt to break the world record. We are hoping more than 200 schools will participate.”

“We are also collaborating with Gary Slack, author of the award-winning ‘Sign with Olli’ books featuring Olli the monkey who loves to sign. Olli features in the training DVD that every school who registers will receive to help them to teach their students the song in a fun and engaging way.”
