Highbridge’s famous ‘wonkybout’ dismantled by workmen!

-

Highbridge’s controversial ‘wonkybout’ – which was named Britain’s ugliest roundabout by one senior councillor last year – is being modified this week to make it look a little more normal!

The County Council’s highways department has removed the lop-sided plastic bollard and mass of poorly-designed concrete, replacing it with a more standard design.

Jan Hookings, spokeswoman for Somerset County Council, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “We are removing the existing central position and creating a level area which will be slightly lower than before.”

Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report last November how the roundabout outside Highbridge’s Asda supermarket had been called ‘Britain’s ugliest’ by Burnham and Highbridge Deputy Mayor Cllr Neville Jones. Our report was then followed up by newspapers, radio stations and even TV channels (as pictured above).

A campaign was launched on Burnham’s discussion forums here to save the ‘wonkybout’ from changes and a Burnham-On-Sea.com poll found 77 per cent of people were in favour of keeping the old structure.

But the campaign failed and this week workmen were busily changing the now-famous traffic island on the Bristol Road.
