Storm force winds of up to 70mph gave Burnham-On-Sea a battering on Saturday evening (January 17th), leaving almost 80 homes without power and causing damage.
The winds and heavy rain struck at around 7pm, bringing down trees, fences and signs and causing a low voltage substation failure in Highbridge that left 79 properties without power for several hours near the town’s police station.
The information board in the centre of Burnham-On-Sea was blown off its base, as pictured here, and several lights were damaged on the town’s seafront.
Staff at the pier struggled to control two large parasols from being blown around, which were damaged in the wind.
“In the end it took four of us to get each parasol down,” pier manager Louise Parkin told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “The wind blew one pane of glass, two globe lights and some roof material from the top of the kiosk plus a few lights.”
Trees were reported down in Stoddens Lane and along Harp Road, near Mark.
Staff at Burnham’s pier struggled to control this large parasol, which had been ripped by the strong winds and was left teetering in the winds.
This huge sign at the entrance to Morland Road in Highbridge was brought down in Saturday’s storm.
Fences at the entrance to Asda in Highbridge were also blown over in the high winds.
