Pro-wind farm group will back Burnham scheme at public meetings

-

Burnham-On-Sea pro-wind farm group FORCE is to have its say during two meetings on the proposed wind farm on the outskirts of the town.

The Families for Clean Energy group will speak in favour of the development at a public meeting at Brent Knoll Village Hall at 2.30pm on Friday (August 4th) and also at the planning committee meeting on Tuesday (August 8th) in Bridgwater when a decision is expected to be made.

FORCE spokeswoman Colette Winfield told burnham-On-Sea.com: “We feel we are with the majority on this issue. Public attitude surveys held both locally and nationally say that people support wind as a clean and renewable resource.”

“There is some local opposition but it is restricted to a group of people in Brent Knoll who are worried about property prices. We understand this, although evidence from estate agents indicates that wind farms make little difference to house prices and if they dip for a while they soon recover.”

“Many members of FORCE, including myself, live near to the development too, but we prefer to see this as a great opportunity for the Burnham area to do its bit to fight global warming. It is a shame that local MPs have rushed to condemn local wind developments but we think this is more to do with local politics than the big picture. By contrast, Somerset County Council is taking the lead in developing wind energy on council owned land, helping Somerset to deliver on its targets for renewable energy.”

“FORCE welcomes this well-thought out scheme to reduce the effects of climate change by harnessing Somerset’s plentiful supply of wind. We hope that the Sedgemoor planning committee will show the same vision and leadership so that we in our area can make our own contribution. We trust that our supporters will join us at the forthcoming meetings to make this point.”

Planners at Sedgemoor have receommended that the scheme be turned down, but the final decision on whether to follow the recommendation will rest with Sedgemoor’s planning committee on August 8th.
