One of the region’s biggest and longest-running charity motorcycle events visited Burnham-On-Sea on Sunday (June 22nd).
Westland’s Vintage Motorcycle Club usually finishes its annual charity bike run on Weston’s seafront lawns, however organisers were disappointed that the council there wanted to start charging them for parking so they switched the event to Burnham instead.
A total of 152 Veteran, Vintage and Post-War classic motorbikes therefore headed onto Burnham’s seafront at the end of the ride from Lyme Regis via Wells, Cheddar, Wedmore and Mark. They were welcomed by Mayor and Mayoress Martin and Arlene Cox, as pictured here.
Organiser Dick Dampier told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’ve had a warm welcome to Burnham with plenty of parking on the seafront and lots of positive interest from local people and the Town Council.”
The Mayor said: “It was very nostalgic seeing the old names such as Royal Enfield, B.S.A., Norton and Harley Davidson, also some bikes with sidecars with upholstered leather seats!”
“This Coast to Coast run takes a lot of organising by Dick Dampier who is assisted by 70 bike marshals. The atmosphere was great and for me to pick one bike out for ‘Mayor’s Choice’ an impossible task – the short list kept changing as each group of bikes came into view. It was an enjoyable event which I hope is repeated again next year – they are very welcome to return.”
The Mayor picked a 1958 197 cc James Captain owned by Andy Parfitt as his choice for the Mayor’s award.
The Coast To Coast Run has been running for 27 years and has raised over £70,000 for charity in that time – with Headway Somerset benefiting this year.
