The Met Office has upgraded its weather warning for the Burnham-On-Sea area for late on Sunday and early on Monday morning as heavy rain and strong winds are expected to sweep into the region.
Persistent heavy rain is likely to set in at the end of Sunday, accompanied by strengthening winds of up to 80mph, it says.
The Met Office has raised its warning from yellow to an amber warning.
“Currently forecasts suggest a low pressure system will rapidly deepen just to the south west of the UK later on Sunday, before moving across the country,” said a spokesman.
“This could bring gusts of 60-80mph quite widely across the southern half of the UK, with gusts of more than 80mph possible in places – especially on exposed coasts.”
“Winds of this strength could bring down trees or cause structural damage, potentially causing transport disruption or power cuts.”
“During the initial phase, heavy rainfall seems more likely to be the main issue, with surface water flooding perhaps happening quite quickly in places given the intensity of rain falling onto already wet ground, perhaps exacerbated by drains blocked by leaf and twig debris.”
“The public should be aware that surface water flooding may develop quite rapidly.”
