Two Burnham-On-Sea girls have been picked to represent Team GB in the European Waterski Racing Championships later this month.
Hannah and Lauren Bird will be in action from 19-27th July in Vichy and Eguzon in France.
The duo will be competing in an action-packed four races over the nine days, which during the current hot weather that France is experiencing will be gruelling.
It is the first time that the sisters have been picked for the GB team and is quite an achievement since they have only been waterskiing for a year,
Hannah, 15, will be skiing in the Eurokids B category, which is 14-16 year olds, with Team 121 alongside a crew of Dave Ellis and Colin Harris from Cardiff.
And Lauren, 12, will be skiing in Eurokids A for 12- 14 year olds, with Team 55 which will be crewed by driver Alfredo Alongi and her father Steve Bird.
“They are both looking for a podium place at the least, but are aiming high for first place in their respective categories,” said mum Cathy.
“In the European Cup races in Essex, Geel and Viersel in Belgium and Ybbs, Austria, they have both got first place in the whole series.”
“They have also already done amazingly well this year by getting podium places in all their British races and have gained first place in the championships already, with two more races left to go.”
Hannah says she is hoping that, if all goes acording to plan, she will move up to the juniors in the final two British races to try and secure a place in the British Team for the World Waterski Racing Championships which will be held in New Zealand next year.
Their father Steve is also crewing for three of the teams that Great Britain is sending to the European Championships – number 1 in formula 2 Dave Sewell and current number 3 lady Marisa Alongi and current number 1 in formula 3, Ashley Cooper.
