Proposals to install ‘hundreds’ of Portakabins in a village near Burnham-On-Sea to serve as temporary accommodation for Hinkley Point workers are set to be discussed at a public meeting this week.
A tunnelling construction company working on the Hinkley Point C project is set to discuss its proposals for the Watchfield Inn site with local residents.
The meeting will be held in Watchfield Village Hall on Thursday August 23rd at 8pm when further details are set to be announced.
Local resident Kelton Black told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “From the illustrations of the proposed development, the dorm-style accommodation is very inapproporiate for a site like this.”
“The local community have expressed that the Watchfield Inn be redeveloped to benefit of the local area and I can’t see how this proposal will anything positive for the community.”
Rachael Cotton added: “No planning application has been submitted yet but the drawings that we have been given indicate that around 300 Portakabins could be installed on the previous pub car park and campsite next to the Watchfield Inn, which would be very extensive.”
“There would be a shuttle bus service taking workers from the temporary accommodation over to Hinkley Point. There’s very little information at the moment, so want to hear the plans from the developer at the meeting before giving our views.”
Another resident, who asked to stay anonymous, added that the site looks like a “prison” and is “totally unsuitable”.
Burnham-On-Sea.com has invited the tunnelling company to comment about the plans, but no response was received at publication time.
