Burnham-On-Sea’s war memorial plaque has been refurbished, thanks to a donation from a group of local Freemasons.
The new-look plaque, naming the Burnham-On-Sea residents who perished in World Wars I and II, was formally unveiled on Wednesday (August 30th), as pictured here.
John Chinn, Charity Steward at the Mark Lodge of Freemasons in Burnham, said the group is pleased with the final result.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com how the work came about: “When the Worshipful Master Richard Kilburn of the Mark Lodge of Freemasons in Burnham-On-Sea was appointed, he suggested he’d like something to be given to Burnham Hospital in some way to mark the recognition of the treatment that he received as a patient there.”
“Subsequently, Bernard Spilsbury, Chairman of the Friends of Burnham War Memorial Hospital, was contacted and after considering several ideas it was decided to refurbish the memorial plaques situated in the hospital grounds.”
“Richard Marsh of Burnham Funeral Services was approached who suggested a method he could use to improve and preserve them for many years ahead. We feel this is not only of benefit to the hospital, but also to the members of the Royal British Legion and general public on Remembrance Days.”
“The Worshipful Master kindly put forward the cost to be ‘match funded’ by the Mark Provincial Grand Lodge of Somerset who approved the request.”
Representatives from the Friends of Burnham War Memorial Hospital, Burnham’s branch of the Royal British Legion and Freemasons gathered at the rededication of the memorial, as pictured here.
