The base of Highbridge’s historic war memorial has been damaged by traffic being diverted past it during ongoing major roadworks.
Paving slabs around the Church Street landmark have split, as shown in our photo above, prompting Royal British Legion members to this week consider the introduction of extra bollards to give it more protection.
With the roadworks (pictured right) scheduled to continue for at least another five months – due to the ongoing construction of a roundabout for the new Asda store – concerns have been expressed that the landmark could suffer further damage.
Bob Northcombe, Vice Chairman of the Burnham and Highbridge Royal British Legion, told Burnham-On-Sea.com his group is considering bringing in the extra bollards.
“We have been talking about this very recently within the British Legion and are trying to get something done as soon as possible,” he said on Thursday (February 15th).
He added: “It should be noted that some of the tarmac around the base of the memorial was accidentally damaged during last year’s remembrance service, but it is very possible that the extra traffic in recent weeks has caused additional damage.”
The Burnham Road spur onto the A38 closed in January to allow seven months of roadworks to begin.
