One half of Britain’s longest married couple has died peacefully in Burnham-On-Sea.
Great-great-grandfather Walter Postings, known as Wally, was 101 when he passed away on Thursday, November 19th.
Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report in September that the couple had become the UK’s longest married couple, having reached their 80th wedding anniversary earlier this year.
Wally’s funeral service is due to be held today (Thursday, November 26th) at Weston-super-Mare Crematorium at 11.30am. The family has requested that no mourning clothes are worn at the funeral.
Wally and his wife Beatrice, known as Pete, pictured here, lived through two world wars, five monarchs and 19 prime ministers.
They met at a party in Williton, Somerset when they were around 18 and married within a couple of years at a registry office in Gloucester.
They later moved to Cheltenham where Wally worked for Rotol Air Screws at the start of the war before being relocated to Worcester in 1941. In 1951 they took over Culverwells Antiques in Victoria Street in Burnham from Pete’s father, who had established the business 1921.
Wally and Pete retired in 1975 and enjoyed many happy years together in their bungalow in Burnham. Wally and Pete had three children and also have four grandchildren, eight Great Grandchildren and two Great-Great Grandchildren.
When asked the secret of such a long and happy marriage, Wally told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s all about give and take” and Pete added: “I just love him and that’s it.”
