A Burnham-On-Sea couple have this week become Britain’s longest married couple.
Great-great-grandfather Walter Postings, known as Wally, and wife Beatrice, known as Pete, have taken the title after one half of the previous record holders died in Plymouth.
Wally, 100, and Pete, 101, pictured, were married on March 27th, 1929.
The devoted pair are often seen holding hands at Tudor Lodge residential home in Brightstowe Road, Burnham.
Tudor Lodge manager Chris Arnold told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Wally and Pete are a pleasure to have at Tudor Lodge. Wally enjoys regular walks around the garden to keep active and the pair have very sharp minds.”
“They can often be found holding hands in the lounge, which is lovely to see and testament to how close they are after 80 years of marriage.”
The title has moved to the the Burnham couple after Frank Milford, married to Anita for 81 years, died at Warwick Park Nursing Home in Plymouth.
Mr and Mrs Postings have lived through two world wars, five monarchs and 19 prime ministers. They met at a party in Williton, Somerset when they were around 18 and married within a couple of years at a registry office in Gloucester.
They later moved to Cheltenham where Wally worked for Rotol Air Screws at the start of the war before being relocated to Worcester in 1941. In 1951 they took over Culverwells Antiques in Victoria Street in Burnham from Pete’s father, who had established the business 1921.
Wally and Pete retired in 1975 and enjoyed many happy years together in their bungalow in Burnham. Wally and Pete had three children and also have four grandchildren, eight Great Grandchildren and two Great-Great Grandchildren.
When asked the secret of such a long and happy marriage, Wally told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s all about give and take” and Pete added: “I just love him and that’s it.”
