History re-enactment event set to return in 2015 after positive debut

-

Crowds of people attended a historical re-enactment show at Highbridge’s Oaktree Arena over the weekend – with heavy rain during Bank Holiday Monday failing to dampen spirits.

Colourfully dressed members of over 20 re-enactment groups took part in the special event, called ‘A Walk Through History’, which was held on Sunday and Monday and gave members of the public a chance to see their displays up close.

Organiser Ian Jefferies told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Monday was a wash-out, with the heavy rain hitting attendance, but we had a good turnout on the Sunday and everyone who came along loved it.”

“We’ve had some very positive feedback from the re-enactment groups too, who want the event to return next year. They all have said what a superb location The Oaktree is and we’d like to return here next year.”

“The event has also been great for putting the Burnham area on the map for a unique event like this – and I hope we can grow it in the future,” he added.

The show was an educational and interactive event for all the family, with visitors able to watch many displays and walk into the sites of each group and engage with the re-enactors.

There were also many smaller stalls and displays linked to historical themes, with collections of classic cars, military vehicles, steam rollers and even a Messerschmitt plane that was shot down in the war.

There were also plenty of opportunities to have a go at the historical activities and a Medieval display invited visitors to try out archery.

There were three arenas in use for the displays during the weekend. The centre green of the speedway track was used for displays from the Medieval groups attending and archery.

The event was raising money for BIARS, which runs Burnham’s tourist information centre, and Burnham Lions.
