A major two-day historical re-enactment show is set to be held at Highbridge’s Oaktree Arena later this month involving groups from across the country.
Representatives from over 20 re-enactment groups will be taking part in the event, called A Walk Through History, on Sunday August 24th and Bank Holiday Monday August 25th.
Hundreds of people dressed in costume will be living as they did during their eras, putting on mock battles, gun fights and many other displays over the weekend.
One of the organisers, Ian Jefferies, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This is the only type of event like this in our area where groups from different eras come together at one event.”
“Our aim is to create an event that is enjoyable, educational and interactive for all the family. Visitors will be able to watch the displays and also walk into the sites of each group and engage with the re-enactors to find out more about their eras,” he added.
There will also be smaller stalls and displays that are linked in to the historical theme, with collections of classic cars, military vehicles, steam rollers, static engines and even a Messerschmitt plane that was shot down in the war.
There will also be plenty of opportunities to have a go at the historical activities and a Medieval display will encourage visitors to have a go at archery.
The event will be raising money for BIARS, which runs Burnham’s tourist information centre, and Burnham Lions.
There will be three arenas being used for displays during the event. The centre green of the speedway track will be for displays from the Medieval groups attending and archery. The arena in the main field will see many displays from different groups including on Sunday afternoon a ‘fantasy battle’, where groups from different eras will battle which promises to be very entertaining.
The Wyoming Wild Bunch will be putting on displays in their camp at 12pm and 2pm each day.
There will also be a ‘walk through history ale’ on sale in the clubhouse during the event. The balcony there is a great place to sit and have a relaxing drink whilst watching the displays in the main arena. Also the re-enactors will be in the clubhouse on the Saturday and Sunday evenings and anyone wishing to come along and meet them will be welcome.
To make the event as family-friendly as possible, the organisers say the admission prices have been kept as low as possible, and therefore entry this year will be priced at £6 for adults and free for accompanied children under 16.
Programmes for the event, priced at £1 each, are available from BIARS or Bessies Sweet Shop in Burnham High Street which contain all the timings for the displays.
