Heavy rain and biting winds didn’t stop over 30 people taking part in the latest Burnham-On-Sea beach clean on Saturday (November 24th).

The Friends of Burnham-On-Sea Beach organised the clean-up at the southern end of the estuary near the sailing club.

A wide range of plastic debris and material was collected during the two-hour clean by a group of volunteers including town councillors, residents and children, as pictured here.

Mark Hollidge, organiser of the Burnham-On-Sea beach clean, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was a grey and wet November morning, so it was remarkable that 32 people, including four children, swapped the warmth of their fireside for the muddy banks of the River Brue estuary!”

“Thank you to all for turning out to clear the litter. Nothing unusual or antique was found, just the normal range of plastics small and large. About 95% of the litter was plastic.”

“The hardy group were grateful to the Sailing Club who opened their clubhouse after the beach clean to allow everyone to have a hot drink.”

Litter Free Coast Somerset and Burnham WI were among the groups taking part, and local town councillors Peter Clayton, Mike Facey and Andy Brewer also joined the clean-up.

The next Burnham-On-Sea beach clean will be held on January 19th, 2019 when all will be welcome.
