Self isolating residents in Brent Knoll, including children, are busily baking cakes, bread, and biscuits – and making jam – for the village’s ‘Isolation Bake-Off’.
Using flour, sugar, and other key ingredients being sold at the Brent Knoll Shop, local people are producing the items that will be displayed and sold on Saturday (16th May) to raise funds for a permanent community shop.
Everyone queuing in social distancing will be entertained by buskers while they view all the produce made by their fellow-villagers.
“Unlike the TV bake-off, this is not a competition”, says David Sturgess, a member of the Brent Knoll Community Shop Steering Group.
“This is an opportunity for everyone to join in a community venture to share their isolation baking and cooking ventures – even if that involves a soggy bottom.”
Having been established in just ten days, Brent Knoll’s ’emergency shop’ has become a well-supported venture, by both volunteers and customers.
“A key element of what we’re trying to produce is fun and enjoyment for both our volunteers and our customers”, adds Mr Sturgess. “This bake-off event is a perfect example of that objective.”
The Brent Knoll Emergency Shop was fully dressed with bunting and flags for last weekend’s VE Day celebration, and provided all the scones, cream, and strawberries for road-side tea-party celebrations.
“Right now, we’re providing an ‘Emergency Shop’, but our long term aim is to deliver a permanent village shop – and the hope of restoring our village Post Office.”
