Dozens of people from local service charities and cadet groups took part in a parade through Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (June 29th) to mark Armed Forces Day.
Crowds lined the route of the parade, led by Burnham Marching Brass Band and local veterans, as pictured here, with onlookers applauding and waving Union Jacks.
The parade of cadets and dignitaries began outside The Princess Theatre and then headed along the High Street to the town flag pole, at the junction of Abingdon Street and Pier Street, where a flag-raising ceremony and remembrance ceremony took place.
The ceremony comprised of a short address by the Chaplain, a flag raising by Mayor’s Cadet William Leader, the Exhortation and reciting of Kohima Epitaph by the Royal British Legion’s John Crosby, and an address by Deputy Lord Lt Tom Lang. The Last Post was played by Burnham cornet player Fee Buckton.
Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Bill Hancock, thanked the groups for attending and praised residents “for doing the town proud.”
Burnham-On-Sea’s MP James Heappey, who served as a major in the Rifles, was among those in attendance.
John Crosby, of Burnham’s branch of the Royal British Legion, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’re delighted with how it went – there was an extremely good turnout this year. It was great to see so many residents out along the streets too as the parade went past.”
