A special ceremony and two minute’s silence was held in Burnham-On-Sea on Friday (May 8th) to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day.
Burnham’s branch of the Royal British Legion held a short ceremony in Victoria Street with two minutes’ silence during the national moment of remembrance for those who died in the World Wars.
The event was not publicly announced in advance to avoid crowds of spectators gathering in Victoria Street to watch due to the ban on public gatherings during the Coronavirus pandemic.
Burnham’s ceremony was led by the Royal British Legion’s Chairman John Crosby, Standard-Bearer Simon Orchard MBE, Legion Vice Chairman Bernard Spragg and the Royal Navy’s Charles Dowdall.
The ceremony coincided with the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall leading the nationwide silence at 11am to honour servicemen and women during World War Two.
Victory in Europe Day marks the day in 1945 when Britain and its allies accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany, bringing the war in Europe to an end.
