Burnham-On-Sea area celebrates 60th anniversary of VE/VJ Day
Patriotic residents across Burnham-On-Sea and surrounding villages have been celebrating the 60th anniversary of VE and VJ day this week.
A three-day event was held in the village of Mark, near Burnham, involving numerous attractions and fundraising events, including a 1940s-style wartime dance and dinner.
Among other attractions was a craft fayre, morris men, vintage vehicles, quad bikes, a dog show and archery demonstrations.
Many stalls also attended, raising funds for local groups and charities. Valerie Comer’s patriotic decorated stall, pictured above, was decorated with Union Jacks. She was raising money for Mark Bowling Club.
And Burnham-On-Sea RNLI’s Supporters’ Group were also there, raising money from the sale of lifeboat-themed merchandise and greetings cards. During the day, £110 was raised.
Our photo shows RNLI supporters Catriona Newman, Roy and Dot Hall, and Eric and Mary Summers with the merchandise and collectables they were selling.
Nick Van Der Bijl, one of the event’s organisers, is shown on the right with one of the many wartime and vintage vehicles that were on display.
Jendy Weekes, one of the organisers of the three day event, told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the event had been a “huge success.”
She added: “We’ve had more than 1,000 visitors during the three days and everyone seemed to enjoy it a great deal.”
Elsewhere, town and district councillors joined other local dignatories in gathering at St Andrew’s Church in Burnham on Sunday afternoon for a special church to mark the occasion.
