Over 100 classic vehicles are expected to arrive on Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront on Saturday evening (June 2nd) during the 19th annual Vale of Avalon Vintage Vehicle Road Run.
The popular event will show off a range of vintage vehicles, from cars and military vehicles, to emergency service vehicles and motorbikes.
The idea for the run was first born in 1993, when Den Stone, a lorry enthusiast from Glastonbury, wondered what to do with his vintage vehicles.
The run starts in Glastonbury and the vehicles will move into Burnham-On-Sea, arriving at the Pier Street Car Park on the South Esplanade at around 6.00pm.
The cars will be on show until around 7pm when the Mayor of Burnham, Cllr Ken Smout, will present awards to the best entries. Funds raised by the run will be donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
“We are really looking forward to the event and hope that as many people as possible will be around to look at the cars and help us to raise money for this good cause,” organiser Daphne Stone told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
Since its beginning, the run has gone from strength to strength and over the years has raised approximately £35,000 for various charities.
Among those receiving funds have been British Diabetics, Children’s Hospice South West, the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, the Gurkha Welfare Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support and the Mendip Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, which once again will be the beneficiary this year.
Awards are given for vehicles that stir a memory and not necessarily those in best show condition, which means all the vehicles have an equal chance of winning something.
The run is open to various vehicles – cars, vans, commercial vehicles, military vehicles, American vehicles, motorbikes – almost anything except tractors, simply because they cannot keep up on the run. The only condition is that vehicles must be more than 20 years old.
The vehicles will begin arriving at Bretenoux Road in Glastonbury from 2.30pm, with many being in position by 4pm, giving the public time to look at the vehicles, buy a programme and make donations to charity. The drivers and passengers will then leave for Burnham-On-Sea, arriving at around 6pm.
