Three unsung heroes in the Burnham-On-Sea area have been congratulated by Somerset County Council this week.
The council’s Chairman, Cllr David Fothergill, congratulated Sedgemoor’s unsung heroes for services to their community during a special awards ceremony.
Across the county 50 people were nominated by their local County Councillor or Parish Council for a ‘Chairman’s Award for service to the community’.
The event was held at Taunton Rugby Club, where Cllr Fothergill congratulated each nominee before awarding them a certificate and small commemorative gift.
Among them was Dot Anderson for her work in Berrow and Burnham-On-Sea. She has given more than 40 years of public service within the community. Dot is well known to many people across a wide age range within the Berrow and Burnham, having been a local midwife for some 35 years.
She is a very cheerful and committed volunteer with a number of clubs and charities and even completed a charity parachute jump for charity in Australia two years ago. She has been a member for over 15 years of the Moose International Ladies, a committed supporter of the Air Ambulance and the Children’s Hospice Southwest. She is also an enthusiastic member of the fundraising team of Berrow Community Association who arrange regular fundraising events to support the village hall.
Neil and Eileen Corkish from the village of Mark near Burnham-On-Sea also received awards, which were collected by their son and daughter Martin and Faye (pictured right).
Mr and Mrs Corkish have both made an enormous commitment to the village of Mark. Mrs Corkish has been on the Parish Council since 1998 and was Chair for 13 years. Always available to give quick and accurate advice on planning and other legislated issues affecting the community, she strived to keep delays to a minimum and within budget. Mr Corkish has long been associated with Mark Community Association as both Chairman and Treasurer. His business acumen and commitment has seen Mark Village Hall develop into a vibrant and energetic facility that caters for all ages, most recently with the establishment of a Multi Use Games Area.
Cllr Fothergill said: “It was a huge honour to personally thank all the award winners for their services to their community. Often, they are the kind of people who don’t enjoy the limelight, but I think it’s important they are publicly thanked for the significant role they play in improving the lives of others in their community.”
