Burnham-On-Sea war veterans and residents mark Armistice Day
Burnham-On-Sea war veterans and local residents joined millions of people across Britain in remembering those who have died at war during a two-minute silence to mark Armistice Day on Friday November 11th.
The silence, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, represented the moment when all guns stopped at the end of World War I.
The gathering of almost 50 people, which included Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Eric Gill, assembled in Burnham-On-Sea High Street at 11am to mark the occasion. Traffic was briefly stopped as those present took the opportunity to reflect.
Meanwhile, Highbridge’s Southwell House Trust Committee hosted an act of Remembrance on Friday as well. The Vicar of Highbridge conducted a short service in which ex-Navy serviceman, Vincent Derham, read the citation and Town and District Councillor Derek Cooper laid a wreath in front of the Railway Apprentice’s plaque and the Frank Foley plaque in the Garden of Remembrance.
