The district council’s Planning Enforcement team are set to put pressure on the owner of Burnham-On-Sea’s Tuckers Garage site to clean it up following a deliberate fire and other security issues in recent weeks.
As we reported here earlier this month, crews were called to Victoria Street at just before 2am on July 5th after the wooden hoardings around the former Tuckers Garage site were alight.
Town Centre Manager Bev Milner Simonds told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “I have been working with Clean Surroundings to get the garage site cleaned up.”
“The Police had been very helpful pressing Abracore to get not only the hoarding repaired but also the gateline reinstated so that the residents in the adjacent property can access their front door without unlocking the gate every time.”
She added: “At present we do not have a start date from Abracore, the owner, and I have now asked the Planning Enforcement team to intervene to put pressure on Abracore to quickly repair the damage.”
“Our local Clean Surroundings team have deep cleaned the shelter after the rough sleeper was arrested last week. I am encouraging Sedgemoor District Council, who own the shelter, to propose lasting solutions to the Town Council.”
The comments come just weeks after Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here about safety concerns at the site.
The owner of the site – property developer Abracore – was last year given the go-ahead to build 35 ‘retirement apartments’ in two blocks of three-storey buildings at the site, but there has been no progress in starting construction.
The site was previously occupied by Tucker’s Garage and petrol station, which was demolished eight years ago this month, as we featured here.
