Proposals for new Burnham-On-Sea town centre shoppers car park unveiled

-

The site of Burnham-On-Sea’s former Tucker’s Garage could be transformed into a brand new shoppers car park under proposals unveiled this week.

Burnham’s Town Team, which is compiling regeneration plans for the town centre, is to approach the site’s agents, Property Link, about bringing the empty site in Victoria Street into public use as a permanent new car park.

The site has been boarded up since Tucker’s Garage was demolished in 2007 to make way for a new development of sheltered homes, however the scheme hit funding issues and never went ahead.

Toni Hammick from Property Link told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “If a sensible offer for the land were put forward, the site’s owner would consider it.”

“In these market conditions, you consider any offer that comes along. It would have to be realistic because the site was bought as development land.”

Tony Lynham, a member of the Town Team’s Regeneration Group which has put forward the proposals, said: “Many residents would like to see this site opened up and brought back into use. More parking is badly needed in the centre of Burnham by shoppers and businesses, so this would be a good location if the funding was right.”

A rethink of Burnham’s car parking strategy was on Burnham Town Team’s list of 20 proposals to regenerate the town centre earlier this summer.

Tesco recently gave more than £320,000 of community funding towards the regeneration of Burnham town centre to offset any damage to traders from its store’s expansion. Further funding has also been earmarked for Burnham’s regeneration.

The Town Council decided earlier this week to ask its Town Improvements Committee to set-up a new group to formalise the regeneration plans in time for a final decision in December on which will be taken foward.
