Fresh bid for 35 flats unveiled at Burnham’s former Tuckers Garage site

-

The developer behind controversial plans to build 35 flats at the former Tucker’s Garage site in the centre of Burnham-On-Sea has this week appealed against the district council’s decision to reject the scheme.

Property developer Abracore wants to build 35 ‘retirement apartments’ in two blocks of three-storey buildings at the prominent site of the former garage in Burnham’s Victoria Street.

Sedgemoor’s Development Control Committee rejected the plans last year, as we reported here, but Abracore is unhappy with that decision and has lodged a formal appeal with the Planning Inspectorate to try and overturn it.

Cllr Bob Filmer, Chairman of Sedgemoor’s Development Control Committee, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There was an overwhelming feeling that this was an unsuitable proposal with inadequate parking facilities.”

“A normal development of this size would require 58 parking spaces, which is far more than the 19 proposed.”

“Councillors were also unhappy with the character and design of the proposed development, and the size in relationship to next door properties.”

Alex Turco from nearby business Positive Wealth Creation said after the decision: “The developer should listen to the suggestions about more parking and a building design and size more in keeping with what is the most historic part of the Town Centre.”

The site was previously occupied by the former Tucker’s Garage, pictured above, which was demolished seven years ago, as we featured here.
